Actor Byeon Woo-seok apologized for the historical distortion controversy surrounding Perfect Crown.
On the 18th, Byeon Woo-seok posted an apology letter written by hand on his personal social media.
He first said, "Over the weekend I worried and was concerned that my words might cause further harm," and added, "I am posting this with a heavy heart to those who felt discomfort and concern because of the work."
He continued, "During the process of filming and acting in the work, I lacked sufficient reflection on what historical context and meaning were contained in the piece and how that might be received by viewers. Through viewers' comments I have undergone introspection and reflection, and I have deeply engraved once again the point that, as an actor, I need the attitude of examining and considering not only acting but also the message and context of a work with greater responsibility," and said, "I sincerely apologize."
He also added, "I once again thank everyone who has cherished Perfect Crown and the lord IAAN and offered advice, and I will become an actor who approaches works with a more careful and deeper attitude going forward. I am sorry."
Byeon Woo-seok recently appeared as the male lead, Lord IAAN, in the recently concluded MBC Friday-Saturday drama Perfect Crown. Perfect Crown ended on the 12th episode (final episode) broadcast on the 16th with its highest viewership ever. However, in episode 11, it sparked fierce criticism for historical distortion, drawing controversy over authenticity by depicting vassal states with items such as the guryu menryugwan and "cheonse" at Lord IAAN's coronation.
The following is the full text of Byeon Woo-seok's apology.
Hello, I am actor Byeon Woo-seok.
Over the weekend I worried and was concerned that my words might cause further harm. I am posting this with a heavy heart to those who felt discomfort and concern because of the work.
During the process of filming and acting in the work, I lacked sufficient reflection on what historical context and meaning were contained in the piece and how that might be received by viewers. Through viewers' comments I have undergone introspection and reflection, and I have deeply engraved once again the point that, as an actor, I need the attitude of examining and considering not only acting but also the message and context of a work with greater responsibility.
I sincerely apologize.
I once again thank everyone who has cherished Perfect Crown and Lord IAAN and offered advice, and I will become an actor who approaches works with a more careful and deeper attitude going forward. I am sorry.
