"Perfect Crown"'s controversy over historical distortion drew a protest from the cyber diplomatic corps VANK.
VANK said on the 17th that it urged the global OTT Disney+, which is releasing the MBC Friday-Saturday drama "Perfect Crown" overseas, to correct the errors related to the controversy over historical distortion.
"Perfect Crown" is a work that ended with a personal record-high viewership of 13.8% nationwide according to Nielsen Korea. In this regard, VANK pointed out that the historical representations and symbols in a work that attracts attention at home and abroad like this have a very large impact on viewers worldwide.
The scene causing the controversy over historical distortion is contained in episode 11 of "Perfect Crown." In the drama, Prince Iaan (Byeon Woo-seok) ascending to the throne wears a guryu menryugwan and receives the words "chense" from attendees.
According to VANK, the guryu menryugwan and "chense" are symbols of a vassal state's ruler. The symbols of an independent country's emperor are the siyimonyeryugwan and "manse." This could be interpreted as acknowledging a part of the Northeast Project, a historical distortion controversy in which China has continuously tried to incorporate Korean history into its own historical system, within a Korean drama.
In response, the producers of "Perfect Crown" also issued an apology on their official website immediately after the controversy and announced plans to request corrections from the global OTT platform. Subsequently, in the rebroadcast of episode 11 of "Perfect Crown," the audio for the "chense" scene was edited out. However, Disney+, which is presenting "Perfect Crown" overseas, has not yet made corrections.
VANK said it sent a letter requesting audio and subtitle corrections for episode 11 of "Perfect Crown" to Disney+. It also said it plans to carry out a citizen participation correction campaign to correct errors in Korean history and cultural content within global OTTs. <
