Actor Sharon Stone (68) has revealed shocking behind-the-scenes details about the white outfit in the interrogation room scene of the film "Basic Instinct," which is considered the most famous pause-and-rewind moment in movie history.
In a recent interview with Harper's Bazaar magazine, Sharon Stone revealed how the all-white outfit that became a symbol of the 1992 erotic thriller classic "Basic Instinct" came into being.
In the film, Sharon Stone played Catherine Tramell, a seductive crime novelist implicated in a murder case, engaging in a tense psychological game with detective Nick Curran (played by Michael Douglas). In particular, the scene in the interrogation room where she crosses and then uncrosses her legs while wearing a skirt shocked audiences worldwide and became one of the most paused moments in film history.
About the scene, Sharon Stone confessed, "I discussed with director Paul Verhoeven what I would wear in the interrogation scene," revealing the pressure she felt at the time. She said she bluntly told the director, "Well, I hope you don't expect me to wear something explicit like putting my tits on a platter and showing them."
Director Paul Verhoeven coolly replied, "I don't care whether you wear a turtleneck or tie your hair up in a topknot," and that exchange became the starting point for the neat mock turtleneck and sleekly pulled-back hair that completed the legendary "Catherine Tramell look."
She said, "Catherine chooses and controls when and what to reveal even at the moment she is being interrogated," and explained, "It makes people think she is showing everything, but in fact she gives nothing to anyone." She added, "It was a very interesting setting where the costume, form, function and the character's actions fit perfectly together," showing a deep understanding of the era-defining character.
Meanwhile, in July last year news emerged that "Basic Instinct" would be rebooted, and Sharon Stone fired off blunt, spicy remarks about it.
In an interview with the U.S. talk show Today, Sharon Stone expressed skepticism about the reboot's production, saying, "If it's going to play out exactly the same way as the original I appeared in, I don't know why you would bother making it again."
