Fly To The Sky's Hwanhee took his mother on her first trip to Jeju Island.
On the 16th, KBS2's Mr. House Husband aired a segment showing Hwanhee and his mother's first Jeju trip.
Hwanhee's mother, who was going to Jeju for the first time in 74 years, stepped into the airport for the first time in her life with excitement. Hwanhee said, "I think we went to take passport photos. We took photos together, and she asked me to take a portrait for her memorial photo, which made me upset and I cried. Then seeing that, I think my mother decided to open her heart," explaining the background of the Jeju trip's realization.
His mother said, "It's the first time, so I'm nervous. While preparing yesterday I was excited. I feel like I could cry. It's been 74 years, isn't this your first trip? Don't cry following me," she said. Hwanhee boasted, "I'm a person who doesn't cry. I have never cried in my life," but footage from an earlier episode showing Hwanhee sobbing while seeing his mother take a memorial photo appeared as archive footage, drawing laughter.
Then Hwanhee lied, saying, "You can't wear shoes when boarding the plane. You have to take them off at the door when you get on the plane," and his mother, who fell for it, actually took off her shoes as soon as she boarded. He complained, "I thought she was really going to take them off. She really did, and the cabin crew laughed. There were three of them. I showed that I was a first-timer and it was really embarrassing," adding, "Ugh, what a brat. How dare you tease your mother like that, it's humiliating."
But Hwanhee didn't stop there and lied again, "When we depart and the plane takes off and rises into the sky, if you bow your head it saves fuel." Brian criticized, "What a mean guy," watching this. His mother, fooled again, bowed her head and sensed something was off, then scolded, "You idiot, look at how you're teasing mom. Keep teasing her. It's her first time," adding to the laughter.
Later, his mother looked out the window and exclaimed, "It's clouds, clouds." She said, "It felt a little strange. Seeing outside covered in white made me a bit scared. Is it really floating? I felt happy too. So this is what a plane is like," and was moved, saying, "Thanks to my son I got to ride a plane. Thanks to Mr. House Husband."
Hwanhee said, "You originally didn't want to do Mr. House Husband," and his mother said, "I thought about it a lot. I didn't know it would be this good. Riding a plane. Because of Mr. House Husband my sister-in-law seems to feel a bit sorry. She cried watching the broadcast. She said, 'Mother, from now on I'll celebrate your birthday and take good care of you,'" conveying the positive effects of Mr. House Husband.
Then Hwanhee said frankly, "My brother contacted me after seeing Mr. House Husband and said, 'Take mom on a trip,' and I was angry thinking, 'Why is he telling only me to take care of mom?' so I didn't get along with my brother. But we resolved it," he said. As they neared arrival in Jeju, Hwanhee's mother suddenly shed tears, drawing attention.
Eun Ji-won said, "She may have resolved that she might not get to ride in her lifetime," and Lee Yo-won said, "Riding a plane isn't that difficult, so she may have wondered why she couldn't ride until now and had many thoughts," expressing sorrow. The mother recalled her late mother-in-law, saying, "I thought I would never be able to go in my life. Grandma always said that. She never even got to go to Jeju. And she passed away. Always saving money."
She said, "I wasn't even intending to cry, but the moment I saw the Jeju airport sign my chest felt torn and sorrow welled up. I couldn't believe I was really here. I started crying without realizing it," she said. Hwanhee said, "My mother has always been so tense and always worried about what others think, but I hope this trip can be a start for her to let go a bit and live more comfortably."
After arriving at the airport, Hwanhee put his mother into the rental car he had prepared. The car he had prepared was a blue convertible, and his mother criticized, "Why is the car that color? It's so strange. It looks flashy. Renting such a shabby car and choosing such an odd color. I'm so mad I could die." But when asked, "How long has it been since you saw the sea?" he surprised everyone by answering, "I've never seen the sea?" Hwanhee then opened the top and drove along the coastal road, and upon seeing the sea his mother stopped being annoyed and exclaimed repeatedly, "It's wide and nice. Look at the waves. It's magnificent. I see the sea for the first time in 74 years. Oh my."
He said, "It felt so good. I wanted to dance. I can't smell well, but it felt fresh as if a pleasant scent came in," he said. Getting out of the car and approaching the sea, his mother laughed, "After 74 years this pent-up feeling is blown open. It's so good." Seeing this, Hwanhee said, "It's the first time I've seen her talk to herself like that. I've never seen her express emotions like this. She always suppresses them. She always holds them in. She expressed feelings without thinking she existed. Seeing this, all those emotions seemed to come up," expressing satisfaction.
After seeing the sea, his mother shed tears again. Hwanhee said, "Coming here with my mother feels different. I see things I never saw before," he said. The two then headed to a canola flower field, and his mother, with an excited expression, even spoke to the flowers. Hwanhee laughed, "At first it seemed strange, but my mother is really pure. I wondered if my mother looked at me like this when I was young. I thought she must have loved me like this. It feels like I saw my mother's girlish sensibility for the first time."
However, when they went to a restaurant together his mother again showed a displeased expression. Earlier, Hwanhee's mother had revealed that she had refused to eat with Hwanhee for 10 years, saying, "I look a bit poor. When you're old and something hot goes in, your nose runs, and if rice grains get on the side of your mouth I feel like I'm ugly, so I hate that," explaining her reason. In the end, Hwanhee and his mother sat side by side at a single-person bar table without facing each other to eat. His mother checked the mirror throughout the meal, and when Hwanhee called her a "mirror princess," she replied, "I'm not a princess, I'm an old woman." Hwanhee added, "Anyway, even though we ate side by side, thank you for coming all the way to Jeju and eating with me," expressing gratitude and deepening the emotion.
