'The production team of Perfect Crown issued a statement regarding the controversy over historical distortion.
The production team of the MBC Friday-Saturday drama Perfect Crown (writer Yoo Ji-won, directors Park Jun-hwa and Bae Hwa-young, planner Kang Dae-seon, produced by MBC, Kakao Entertainment) said on the 16th through the official website, "We sincerely bow our heads and apologize to the many viewers who have watched the drama with affection for causing concern due to issues with worldbuilding settings and historical verification," the team said.
The production team said, "We take seriously viewers' criticism that the scene in which the king wears the 'guryu-myeonryugwan' at the king's enthronement ceremony and the officials shout 'cheonse' damages Korea's autonomous status," and bowed, saying, "This is an issue that occurred because the production team failed to carefully examine how Joseon's ceremonial rules changed throughout history."
They also acknowledged, "Perfect Crown is both a romance and an alternate-history drama, and while careful and in-depth consideration was needed for parts where an imaginary world intersects with real historical context, we lacked effort to refine the worldbuilding meticulously and to examine it more thoroughly."
They added, "We humbly accept viewers' criticisms and will correct the audio and subtitles of the relevant parts as quickly as possible in future reruns and in VOD and OTT services," and "We deeply apologize once again for causing discomfort to viewers."
Finally, they added, "Going forward, our production team will do our best to produce works that repay viewers' trust with a greater sense of responsibility."
Previously, in episode 11 of Perfect Crown, which aired on the 15th, scenes showed the emperor (king) of the autonomous country wearing the 'guryu-myeongwan,' which signifies a feudal lord who is a vassal of the emperor rather than the 'sibi-myeonryugwan' with 12 strings of jewels, and scenes showed officials shouting 'cheonse,' used when a vassal state is subordinated to an imperial state, rather than 'manse,' the symbol of an independent autonomous country, sparking controversy over historical distortion and concerns about Northeast Project–style claims.
As the controversy deepened, in the rerun of episode 11 broadcast on the afternoon of the 16th, the sound of shouting "cheonse" was erased, drawing attention.
