Actress Yu Hyeri said she has been suffering from trauma for more than 20 years since her divorce from Lee Geun-hee.
On the 14th episode of MBN's 'Exclusive World', Yu Hyeri's daily life living with three cats was revealed.
That day Yu Hyeri said, "I prefer being with the cats to complicated, noisy things. My mother also says every day, 'Don't live with cats; meet a man. Do you want to live and die with cats? What will become of you?' She tells me every day, 'Don't just stay like that, go out. Don't stay at home holding a cat; go outside.' Mothers are all the same," conveying her mother's reaction, pitying her for living with cats for more than 15 years.
She said there was a time when she dreamed of building a family and being happy, "I also felt pressure about my age. At that time, I thought you had to get married once you passed 30. My father was very strict with me and I was always under scrutiny. There were those things, and I had those thoughts. I thought if I met a good person I would get married right away."
At one time, when she was at the height of her fame in 1994, Yu Hyeri married fellow actor Lee Geun-hee despite her parents' objections, drawing attention. But the two divorced after about a year and a half, and legally became strangers in 1998. Yu Hyeri recalled, "We divorced after a year and a half, it seems like two years by year count. I think we were immature and not cautious at the time."
Afterward, meeting Ahn So-young, Yu Hyeri said, "When I meet my mother she always says that. While eating she watches me. She looked at me like that and said, 'Isn't there anyone?' She always says that. She wants me to meet someone," expressing her distress. In response, Ahn So-young explained, "Because you are the eldest daughter, your mother keeps worrying about something."
But Yu Hyeri expressed skepticism about remarriage, saying, "Meeting someone and marrying should be done with great caution." She said, "Stabbing a knife into the dining table, going and smashing all the apartment windows, coming to a recording wrap-up party, drinking and throwing a chair at anyone — that's not normal, right? Seeing those things made me think, 'I made a mistake.' I then realized my father's opposition was not without reason. I seemed to be unusually like that. I think I caused a lot of worry. I should have shown more of my good side; I couldn't show them a happy appearance," and she finally cried thinking of her parents.
She regretted, "I couldn't show my parents the normal, prosperous and happy life like others. I couldn't spend a lot of time with them often. I should have cooked warm meals with my own hands, but I couldn't do that. That felt like my greatest filial failure."
Her older brother also worried, asking Yu Hyeri, "Isn't there a good person you're meeting these days?" and saying, "Even if you can't bring a grandchild to mother while she is alive, I hope you at least show her that you're living well. You should meet a good person and live happily before you get older; living alone looks so lonely."
To this, Yu Hyeri said, "I did have some introductions. I tried matchmaking, tried to see if there was anyone, and made efforts. But trauma exists, doesn't it? Marriage is like this, and meeting someone easily and marrying recklessly is dangerous," revealing the reasons she has no choice but to live alone.
