Radio Star Kim Seong-eun recalled a time when her educational zeal burned so strongly she became the talk of Daechi-dong.
On the 13th episode of MBC variety show Radio Star (hereinafter Ras), in a special on "Teachers' Day: passionate teachers and students," Seo Kyung-seok, Choi Tae-seong, Kim Seong-eun and Hwang Min-ho appeared, and Kim Seong-eun revealed her passionate mom side.
That day Kim Seong-eun revealed a parent's daily routine as a passionate mom. First, saying that while living in a dorm she would go riding with her second and third children, she said that from 8:15 a.m. was her own time.
Kim Seong-eun said that in the mornings she spends a lot of time on her own, including filming YouTube, and conveyed her thinking by saying, "My principle is that if mom is happy, the child can be happy too."
Conversely, in the afternoons she poured time into riding between the second and third child's academies. She explained that she went back and forth between the second child's math and English academies and home, and took the third child across the river to a soccer class, revealing her passionate mom side and surprising viewers.
Above all, that day Kim Seong-eun explained the controversy over academy fees. She opened up, saying, "I said I do YouTube, and while looking for content I suddenly thought, 'How many academies do I send them to? How much is it?' I didn't do it on purpose. I didn't know it would become an issue."
She continued, "I wrote down all the academies and totaled the amounts, and the second child's academies exceeded 10. Including the third child's, the monthly academy fees exceeded 3,000,000 won. I learned that for the first time too. It became a big issue," she confessed.
It even became such a topic that related search terms mentioned Jeong Jo-guk's annual salary. Kim Seong-eun said, "Many people think it's paid with my husband's money, but I earn money too. I also work hard for my children's education. I also appear on home shopping," saying it was her own money.
Meanwhile, although Kim Seong-eun showed her passionate mom side more than anyone, she attracted attention by saying her educational zeal has cooled compared with her first child. Kim Seong-eun explained, "When I raised my first child I raised them as a Daechi-dong kid. If someone asked about academies I would say, 'I know all those academies, I've sent them all.' It wasn't that my child attended only one math academy; they went to calculation academy, geometry academy, thinking skills academy and subject academies," she explained.
Having enrolled the child in four math academies as well as soccer and ice hockey, Kim Seong-eun said, "They liked it themselves. If they had disliked it they couldn't have continued, but they followed along well," and added, "It became a rumor in Daechi-dong." The rumor was that if you went to a certain academy in Daechi-dong, Kim Seong-eun would be sitting there.
Regarding this, Kim Seong-eun said, "I raised my child passionately, but the eldest child, after playing soccer, returned the 'Daechi-dong kid' label. When raising the second child I thought I should let them do what they liked, so I focused on basic Korean, English and math, and on arts and physical education. I sent the second child to only one basic math academy."
On the other hand, she said she is not sending the third child to anything except soccer and an art academy. She then revealed that her passion for private education seems to have come from her own mother.
Kim Seong-eun said, "I also remember counting how many academies I attended. And there were separate Korean teachers and native teachers," which drew surprise.
