Hollywood actress Brooke Shields (60), dubbed a beauty of the century, expressed belated anger over a rude and sexualized interview she experienced at age 15.
On the 13th (local time), according to foreign media reports, Brooke Shields recently appeared on Jesse Tyler Ferguson's podcast "Dinner's On Me" and revealed behind-the-scenes details of the 1981 interview she did with legendary journalist Barbara Walters, expressing displeasure.
At the time, 15-year-old Brooke Shields had risen to worldwide stardom after appearing in the film The Blue Lagoon. But interviewer Barbara Walters asked the minor a blunt question such as "what are your body measurements," and even staged a strange scene in which she made her stand up to compare their figures.
Brooke Shields recalled, "It was crazy that Barbara Walters asked about my body measurements. It was really absurd." She added, "At the time I just answered, but if someone asked me that now I would have answered with a witty remark," and said, "I was too young then, and I took everything as a personal responsibility and was hurt."
Brooke Shields previously mentioned the interview on The Drew Barrymore Show and criticized, "Walters didn't stop. She wanted negative 'sound bites.'" She confessed, "I acted with a smile, but I couldn't shake the feeling that I was used in many ways."
Barbara Walters, who died in 2022 at age 93, is reported not to have apologized for that question during her lifetime. Brooke Shields said, "There was no apology at all. That wasn't her nature," expressing bitterness.
The interview became more controversial because Shields' mother and manager, Terry Shields, was sitting beside her at the time. Terry Shields was at the center of "child exploitation" controversy for putting her daughter to work as a model from 11 months old and having her shoot provocative photo spreads at age 10.
In her autobiography, Brooke Shields confessed to a complicated and difficult relationship with her mother, who struggled with alcoholism. She said, "I have lived in the public eye and have always been judged, but now I can speak my truth," showing a firmer demeanor.
Meanwhile, at 60, Brooke Shields, who still boasts beauty and intelligence, has been actively voicing her views through various broadcasts and interviews.
