In a lawsuit filed by the late pop star Aaron Carter's fiancée against medical personnel following his death in 2022, a settlement has finally been reached. The lengthy legal battle that began to protect the rights of his son is starting to come to an end after four years.
According to foreign media reports on the 14th (local time), Aaron Carter's former fiancée Melanie Martin has reached settlements with some of the defendants in the lawsuit she filed on behalf of her son Princeton Lyric Carter.
Melanie Martin filed a lawsuit in October 2023 claiming that Aaron Carter's death was caused by irresponsible prescriptions from medical staff and pharmacies.
She alleges that although Aaron Carter suffered from substance abuse and mental health issues, medical personnel prescribed highly addictive drugs (Xanax, oxycodone, etc.) without medical justification.
Court documents show that the psychiatrist and the mental health clinic named as defendants quietly settled with Melanie Martin in April. The specific settlement amounts were not disclosed. However, a dental office and a pharmacy in Santa Monica, as well as the large pharmacy chain Walgreens, have not yet reached settlements, so the lawsuit is expected to continue.
Aaron Carter was found dead in a bathtub at his California home on Nov. 5, 2022, shocking fans around the world. He was 34 at the time.
The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner's autopsy found the cause of death to be "accidental drowning" after taking alprazolam (Xanax) and inhaling difluoroethane. Melanie Martin has pursued the lawsuit arguing that the professionals who should have recognized Aaron Carter's unstable mental state continued to supply dangerous drugs, ultimately leading to his death.
The settlement news drew additional attention as it came shortly after Melanie Martin won an inheritance dispute with Aaron Carter's mother, Jane Schneck.
End of the inheritance dispute: A recent court ruling found that Aaron Carter's estate was insolvent, with debts exceeding assets, and allocated all remaining noncash assets to Princeton's mother, Melanie Martin.
Jane Schneck accused Melanie of withdrawing money from her son's account without authorization and fought a legal battle but ultimately lost. Jane later said she had come to believe that "Melanie is taking good care of her grandson" and "accepts her share of responsibility for damaging the relationship," showing a somewhat conciliatory stance.
Once a "high-teen star" beloved worldwide, Aaron Carter experienced ups and downs in his life due to drug addiction and family strife. The legal conflicts that continued after his death now appear to be getting resolved one by one.
