In a wrongful death lawsuit filed against medical staff by the fiancée of pop star the late Aaron Carter, who died in 2022, a settlement has finally been reached. The long legal battle that began to protect his son's rights has started to reach a conclusion after four years.
According to foreign media reports on the 14th (local time), Aaron Carter's former fiancée Melanie Martin has completed a settlement with some of the defendants in the lawsuit she filed on behalf of her son, Princeton Lyric Carter.
In October 2023, Melanie Martin filed a lawsuit claiming Aaron Carter's death was caused by irresponsible prescriptions from medical staff and a pharmacy.
She alleges that although Aaron Carter suffered from substance abuse and mental health issues, medical staff prescribed highly addictive drugs (Xanax, oxycodone, etc.) without medical justification.
Court documents show that the psychiatrist and mental health clinic named as defendants secretly settled with Melanie Martin in April. The specific settlement amount has not been disclosed. However, a dental clinic and pharmacy in Santa Monica and the large pharmacy chain Walgreens have not yet reached agreements, so the lawsuit is expected to continue.
Aaron Carter was found dead in the bathtub of his California home on Nov. 5, 2022, delivering a huge shock to fans around the world. He was 34.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office determined the cause of death to be accidental drowning after taking alprazolam (Xanax) and inhaling difluoroethane. Melanie Martin has pursued the lawsuit on the grounds that professionals who should have recognized Aaron Carter's unstable mental state continued to supply dangerous drugs, which ultimately led to his death.
The settlement news drew additional attention as it came just after Melanie Martin won an inheritance dispute with Aaron Carter's mother, Jane Schneck.
End of the inheritance dispute: A recent court ruling found that Aaron Carter's estate was insolvent, with debts exceeding assets, and awarded the remaining noncash assets to Princeton's mother, Melanie Martin.
Jane Schneck accused Melanie of withdrawing money from her son's account without authorization and fought a legal battle but ultimately lost. However, Jane later said she had come to believe that "Melanie is taking good care of her grandson" and conceded, "I accept my share of responsibility for damaging the relationship."
Once a 'high-teen star' beloved worldwide, Aaron Carter experienced turmoil in life from drug addiction and family conflicts. The legal disputes that continued after his death are now being resolved one by one.
