Actor Ji Ye-eun complained about the burden she felt when she first joined SNL.
On the 13th episode of KBS Cool FM's Park Myung Soo's Radio Show, actor Ji Ye-eun, who recently began a public relationship with dancer Bata, appeared as a guest.
That day Park Myung Soo asked about Ji Ye-eun, "Actually she is not a comedian. You could call her an entertainer. She didn't formally dream of being a comedian or take exams for it. She is a Korea National University of Arts alumnus, and she studied acting at a good school. When she appeared on SNL, what dream did she have?"
Ji Ye-eun said, "My dream was to be a comedy actress. I'm too timid and introverted to be a comedian. So I like comic acting. I thought I couldn't be like a variety entertainer, so I decided I would do comedy acting and dreamed of being a comedy actor. So I once received an F. For doing only comedy. The teacher said, 'If not at school, when will you ever try straight drama?' and gave me an F, so after that I only did tragedies," she recounted.
Park Myung Soo asked, "Did you audition for SNL?" and Ji Ye-eun said, "They contacted me. So I prepared all night. I didn't sleep at all and rented a practice room. I kept thinking what I should show them. I kept acting thinking what I could show in a short time," adding, "At that time 'Decision to Leave' was very popular. I was eating with a friend and we wondered, 'What should we do?' I felt I needed to prepare a secret weapon. Acting has a script, so I thought I should prepare my own specialty. My friend was watching 'Decision to Leave' and said, 'Try Tang Wei. You have the vibe,' so I kept practicing," she revealed.
Then Ji Ye-eun, who performed an impression of Tang Wei on the spot, said, "I studied and exaggerated it so amusingly and made it up. I kept using 'Am I that bad?' as a motif. They really liked it. I felt something clicked then. Everyone burst out laughing. Sure enough, they contacted me to come for a second audition. I prepared hard and went. At that time I did Na Moon-hee's part. It really wasn't similar, but I pushed through with momentum. Everyone said it wasn't the same, but I pushed through with momentum. I also danced to Na Moon-hee's 'Saepping,'" showing her enthusiasm.
Seeing this, Park Myung Soo praised, "She's fresh and it's because she was destined to. Her face is very pretty, likable and cute, she studied acting and developed personal skills, so the judges probably gave her the pass. I think Shin Dong-yeob would have liked her too." Ji Ye-eun said, "He wasn't there then, but after I got in he was happy for me," and Park Myung Soo asked, "At the beginning, aren't the people who appear on SNL the best actors in Korea in terms of acting? Among the new generation they're the best. Wouldn't you be intimidated joining that crew and not be able to do it?"
Ji Ye-eun recalled, "Aren't they all so good? Isn't it amazing? At first I was so intimidated. Everyone acted so well, did ad-libs and performed on stage, showing how entertainers are. I thought I wasn't capable. I'm too introverted and timid and thought I couldn't enter this field. So I cried my eyes out. I cried while looking for the Lord. In the bathroom. Continuously. I felt crushed. I couldn't ad-lib and couldn't say anything. They acted so well. But those moments really trained me a lot."
Park Myung Soo emphasized, "Entertainers are all the same. If you lose the psychological battle, it's over. I always tell people to have confidence. Even when you meet world-class comedians, I can say, 'Hey!' You have to be able to do that." Ji Ye-eun admired, "Suzy unnie was a very senior and I was scared, but when she saw me overwhelmed she gave me courage. I gained courage. She told me this is how you do it, asked questions about things she didn't know and gave a lot of advice on what would be good. She really is great. She's a genius. Because she can do every role. She can play pretty roles and there's no role my unnie can't do. Her range is enormous."
Then Park Myung Soo asked, "Conversely, how would it be if I joined SNL? Tell me honestly," and Ji Ye-eun said, "I wish you would appear once. I would look forward to your ad-libs. I think it would be funny. Everyone would be flustered," and Park Myung Soo worried, "The people there can't lose to my energy. What if I go out and totally flop?" But Ji Ye-eun stressed, "It would be good for you to experience that too. There is no total flop. They somehow save it."
Park Myung Soo asked, "SNL has a host every week. If I'm invited I'll think about it. I might not be able to because I get nervous," and "Was there a host you really wanted to meet?" Ji Ye-eun revealed her fandom, "Everyone. I was like, Can I meet people like this? I also liked Bi senior. I liked 'Full House' and he came out. There are so many," and "Lee Hyori unnie hasn't appeared yet. I want to see Kim Woo-bin senior, Lee Hyori unnie. I'm curious. I think it would be fun just to watch them."
