'You Quiz on the Block' singer Yu Yeol expressed gratitude for regaining his health from a rare disease.
On the 13th episode of tvN's 'You Quiz on the Block' (hereinafter 'You Quiz'), singer Yu Yeol, who had battled 'pulmonary fibrosis' for seven years, appeared. He, who had not been seen in the media for some time, was revealed to the public in 2023 singing at a church. At the time he looked very thin. Because pulmonary fibrosis made breathing itself require energy and caused weight loss, his weight dropped to 41kg.
After being diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2019, he suffered from acute pneumonia and high fever, and in 2024 he was rushed to the emergency room and was unable to leave the hospital ward for six months.
Yu Jae-seok asked, "I heard there was talk of life-sustaining treatment." Yu Yeol said, "My wife did not tell me. She told me to make the decision about life-sustaining treatment and then tell her," and he said his wife showed no tears and cried where she could not be seen. Afterwards the doctor recommended an organ transplant, and that was the only answer. However, after two failed organ transplants he became discouraged. Especially during the second transplant his mother passed away, and his condition deteriorated so much that a close acquaintance held the funeral for him, and he gave up the will to live.
He experienced cardiac arrest and, feeling he was on the brink of life and death, wrote in a note what he wanted to leave for his wife and child.
Then, fortunately, he got another chance at an organ transplant and regained his health. Yu Yeol said, "These are the words of the father who donated his daughter's organs after she suddenly passed away. He said he hoped the person who received our daughter's organs would be healthy. I was so thankful and cried. So I wanted to live a life that remembers even those words," and he barely held back tears as he expressed deep gratitude to the woman who donated lungs to him and her father.
