Group Shinhwa member Kim Dong Wan announced the end of his social media operations about a month after warning he would stop.
On the 12th, Kim Dong Wan posted a long message on his social media saying a friend who had attended the same church since middle school had contacted him.
First, Kim Dong Wan said, "'Hyung, why do people dislike you so much these days? You were always like that, weren't you?' That's right. I was originally this kind of person," and said, "It's not that I suddenly had a lot of time and changed, nor that my personality altered with age. When I was busy I could hide it appropriately, and during big projects I just tried to stay quiet."
He added, "I stood out somewhat everywhere, no, I was quite a conspicuous person. To some I was an entertaining person, to others a very exhausting one. Even to those who approached me thinking I was on their side, they asked why people hated that person so much, why they judged so quickly. In telling the opposing side's story like that, I earned hatred."
He went on to say, "After the pandemic, relationships with people noticeably decreased. And my thoughts increased. I became excessively absorbed in everything, from trivial matters to problems like death," and noted, "Some days I became endlessly dark, and some days I was inexplicably bright. Then I encountered Threads."
Kim Dong Wan explained why he started using social media, saying, "At first I was a little scared. People got angry too easily and hurt each other too easily… but strangely, I sensed a human smell there again. People received empathy and then criticism, laughed together and then spoke of loneliness… it resembled the old PC communication days."
Kim Dong Wan also updated his status, saying, "Recently I received an offer so generous it feels excessive. Why me of all people? To be honest, I still don't know. I feel doubt and fear. I wonder if this might be the last hand life offers me, so I'm trying once more to return with a somewhat combative face."
Later, Kim Dong Wan added, "From now on, Instagram and Threads will be managed by the office. Everyone stay healthy. Let's happily meet offline someday," writing further. Given that his recent social media posts stirred controversy and landed him in several disputes, it seems Kim Dong Wan has made a significant decision.
Earlier, in early last month, Kim Dong Wan had also written on social media, "It already makes me sad that when I enter a project I have to deactivate Threads. Who will I chat with?" and said this was a "contract condition."
