At the time, Lee Soon-jae was starring in the KBS drama 'Gaesori' and was in the middle of filming. However, during filming he suddenly experienced abnormal symptoms in which one eye could not see well, and he was ultimately diagnosed with cataracts.
The surgery was successfully completed, but the production team, considering his advanced age, suggested resuming filming about three months later to allow sufficient recovery. However, Lee Soon-jae firmly refused. He said, "I cannot cause harm to everyone because of myself," showing his determination to return quickly, and he ultimately returned to the set just 15 days after the surgery.
At that time, his vision had not fully recovered, making even daily life difficult. He said the most difficult thing was the script. As it became difficult to read lines with his eyes, Lee Soon-jae asked his agency's CEO and his manager to read the script aloud to him, and he memorized the lines by repeating what was read, continuing to act as before.
The agency CEO recalled, "When he was frustrated, he asked to have the letters printed larger," and added, "We printed so that only about 20 characters fit on a page." He added, "He was someone who had never taken out reading glasses on set even at 92, but that was the first time he used them."
What was most heartbreaking was the hearing problem. The agency CEO said, "To be more honest, the teacher was wearing a hearing aid," and revealed, "He always took out the hearing aid during filming for fear it would show on camera." Even without the hearing aid, he continued acting by focusing on the other actor's lip movements and the atmosphere on set.
Park So-dam, who shared the theater stage with him, also recalled, "That's right. the teacher could not hear well in one ear," and remembered Lee Soon-jae, who nevertheless prepared and worked more thoroughly than anyone.
Although his eyes and ears were not what they used to be, the actor ultimately did not give up the stage.
