Actress Park So-dam recalled acting with the late Lee Soon-jae, and her heartfelt recollections delivered a deep resonance.
On the 12th, the KBS2TV program Celeb Soldier's Secret revisited the late Lee Soon-jae's life as an actor and his human side.
Park So-dam said she formed a bond with the late Lee Soon-jae through the 2017 play Henrietta and the Grandfather. She said, as an actress Park So-dam, I received a great deal of energy as a person as well, and recalled, I learned love and courage while doing theater.
She went on to say, Today my goal was not to cry, showing she was trying to hold back her emotions. But when Lee Soon-jae's voice played during the recording, she seemed to choke up and confessed, When we did the play there was a lot of movement and he really flew across the stage. Hearing his voice makes me cry.
The late Lee Soon-jae was an "eternal active" who did not give up acting even after passing his nineties. He appeared in more than 300 works, but he always said, I'm still working hard, driving himself to do better.
What amazed younger actors above all was his thorough preparation. From the first script reading he had memorized not only his own lines but also the lines of other actors. Actor Jung Bo-seog recalled, He was someone who memorized very quickly. He was the actor most prepared on set, and when I asked whether it was innate or if he had a special method, he said, "just keep reading it," she recalled.
Park So-dam also could not hide her surprise as she remembered the first rehearsal. She said, On the first rehearsal day of "Henrietta and the Grandfather," the teacher suddenly said, "get up and move," and I remember being flustered because I was not ready, she said. She added, The teacher's depth of preparation itself was different. Only when he put the script down did the real practice begin.
Park So-dam said there was a moment she still cannot forget. She said, He really made a mistake only once, and said, The teacher came directly to me, apologized, saying, "I'm sorry, I made one mistake," and left. She said she felt deeply moved, saying, Even for such a small mistake, he approached his junior first to apologize, and I could only feel that he was an adult I truly respected.
Actor Lee Soon-jae prepared more fiercely than anyone else for the stage throughout his life and did not take even small mistakes lightly. So to his juniors he was more than just a great actor; he was a "real adult" who never lost the attitude of learning until the end.
