Samsung Electronics denied the lawsuit filed by British pop star Dua Lipa alleging infringement of portrait and copyright rights.
On the 12th, Samsung Electronics refuted the allegations regarding the unauthorized use of images raised by Dua Lipa's side, saying, "The claim that the artist's image was used without permission is not true."
Earlier, Dua Lipa filed a lawsuit in the U.S. Central District Court of California against Samsung Electronics and its U.S. subsidiary Samsung Electronics America seeking damages for portrait and copyright infringement. According to foreign media, Dua Lipa's claimed damages alone were reported to be $15 million (about 22 billion won), drawing attention.
In the complaint, Dua Lipa's side alleged that Samsung Electronics had used Dua Lipa's image on the packaging of its TV products since last year, and that it had continued to use it without permission despite requests to stop. Dua Lipa's side said the photo is an image registered with the U.S. copyright office under the title "Dua Lipa - Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024."
In the process, Dua Lipa's side also presented fans' SNS reactions as evidence. Some customers allegedly bought the product under the mistaken belief that Dua Lipa was acting as an advertising model. According to foreign media, an X comment cited in the actual complaint reportedly included statements such as, "I wasn't planning to buy a TV, but I bought it after seeing Lipa on the box," and "Because Dua Lipa's photo is on it, I will buy that TV."
Dua Lipa, a British singer who debuted in 2017, remains a popular pop star, having won three Grammy Awards and seven Brit Awards to date. This made the multi-hundred-billion-won portrait lawsuit with Samsung Electronics draw even more attention.
However, Samsung Electronics directly denied the related allegations from Dua Lipa's side, saying, "We confirmed the right to use the image through a content provider partner and used it." This has focused more attention on the outcome of the related lawsuit.
