Actor Cha Hak-yeon mentioned Kim Hyang-gi, with whom he shared chemistry in Absolute Value of Romance.
On the morning of the 11th, an interview with Cha Hak-yeon, an actor in the Coupang Play series Absolute Value of Romance, was held at a café in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul.
Absolute Value of Romance is a high‑teen comedy series that stars handsome teachers and follows a high school girl who used to write romance novels, as she encounters them in reality at unexpected moments and becomes the protagonist of a tumultuous school life. It is released every Friday at 8 p.m. In the drama, Cha Hak-yeon appears as Ga Woo‑soo, the new math teacher at Murim High School, a Mensa member with an IQ of 156 and striking looks, showing his presence.
That day Cha Hak-yeon spoke about working with Kim Hyang-gi, who is 10 years younger in age but far more senior in acting, saying, "She is really such a veteran. It was so fun that I laughed a lot and felt almost apologetic; she would bring little snacks, and talking over things like that became a great source of strength. I think I learned a lot from seeing how she prepared and how steadfast she stood."
When asked whether there might have been difficulty with forms of address, Cha Hak-yeon answered, "I called her Hyang‑gi or playwright Lee Mook, and some staff called her teacher."
He continued, "I was often called by the character name, and I think I received a lot of that energy and acted from it. I felt that energy was powerful; I tend to conserve energy, but I learned a lot from seeing how she allocated and used it well."
Asked specifically what he learned, Cha Hak-yeon said, "I was impressed by how she doesn't waver in the face of some phenomenon. I tend to react even to small things, and in very funny scenes I would laugh and my focus would be disrupted. I was impressed by how she didn't get shaken by those things and felt I should learn that. When we try to be funny, it can become light, but when a scene starts she had an exceptional level of concentration, and I think she performed with enjoyable commitment."
