Actor Kim Hyang-gi cut her bangs for Absolute Value of Romance.
On the 11th, an interview with Absolute Value of Romance actor Kim Hyang-gi was held at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, in the morning.
Absolute Value of Romance is a high‑teen comedy series about a high school girl who wrote romance novels about handsome young teachers and, in reality, meets them at unexpected moments and becomes the protagonist of a tumultuous school life, and it is released every Friday at 8 p.m.
In the drama, Kim Hyang-gi plays Yeui-ju, an eccentric girl who, seeing the four handsome new teachers who moved in, unconsciously projects the narrative of an obsessive stalker onto them. Kim Hyang-gi neutralizes Yeui-ju's delusional scenes, which could easily feel excessive, with her uniquely clear, pure visuals and sly acting, convincing viewers.
That day Kim Hyang-gi opened up about taking on comedy for the first time since her debut, saying, "I've always had a certain respect for comedians. Rather than thinking I have to be funny, I read the script with the idea that if the friend with dreams at that age appears sincerely and without affectation, wouldn't it naturally seem funny?"
Recalling the filming, she said, "Because it was my first time, there were moments when I wondered, 'Is this right?' The director guided me along the way, so it flowed well. The more numerous the elements, the more synergy you get, so I had the urge to be funnier, and I remember being told that when I wanted to overdo it, I didn't have to go that far."
Kim Hyang-gi, who arrived at the interview in the same hairstyle as the Absolute Value of Romance poster, said, "My hair wasn't in a state of being much grown out after finishing the previous project. I didn't have many options. To make a big change I would have had to add hair to make it long, but that didn't fit the image I imagined for Yeui-ju."
She explained, "I wondered what I could do with my own hair, and the idea of making it choppy was the first that came to mind. I thought about whether there was any way to bring out comedic elements externally, and I remember cutting the bangs."
Kim Hyang-gi said she chose Absolute Value of Romance because, "I was very curious about a genre I hadn't tried, and when I read the script, not only Yeui-ju but each character was fresh and fun. It felt lively. Not just Yeui-ju, but I wanted to take on the challenge because I thought it could be an enjoyable work when the characters produced synergy."
