Actor Kim Hyang-gi spoke about still portraying a school uniform role at the age of 27.
On the morning of the 11th, an interview with Kim Hyang-gi, an actor in the Coupang Play series Absolute Value of Romance, was held at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul.
Absolute Value of Romance is a high-teen comedy series about a high school girl who wrote romance novels starring handsome male teachers and, when she encounters them in unexpected moments in real life, becomes the protagonist of an eventful school life. It is released every Friday at 8 p.m.
In the drama, Kim Hyang-gi plays Ye-ui-ju, an eccentric girl who, upon seeing the four handsome teachers who moved in, unconsciously superimposes the narrative of an obsessive stalker onto them. Kim Hyang-gi balances Ye-ui-ju's delusional scenes, which could feel excessive, with her uniquely clear, pure visuals and artful acting, convincing viewers.
Recalling the time of filming, Kim Hyang-gi said, "I thought a lot about my school days. Of course, I studied engineering, but while filming the director sincerely auditioned classmates several times and arranged the casting."
Kim Hyang-gi said, "Everyone fit their characters well, and I am really grateful because each person fit their energetic roles so well that we actually filmed like high school students," adding, "They talked to me about memes and told me about trending topics, which brought a liveliness I hadn't felt on set for a while and gave life to the Ye-ui-ju character."
Born in 2000, Kim Hyang-gi turned 27 this year. Even so, she still looks natural in school uniform scenes. Kim Hyang-gi recalled, "(Going forward) I don't know. If the role is given to me, I think I should work hard, and until a few years ago I had the external burden that actors who went through certain child actor periods have, but apart from that I had to work hard on the given projects. There wasn't time to worry for long."
She continued, "At some point while doing it, the moment of wearing the school uniform came. I worried since it had been a long time, but from the reactions around me it seems to be okay for now. People said it seems to suit me, and as an actor it's good to have a wide range up and down, so I'll work hard as much as I can," she said.
