Broadcaster Yu Jae-seok made a perfect transformation into the director of a short-form drama that had to be completed in just one day, bringing great laughter to living rooms.
On the afternoon of the 9th, MBC variety program Hangout With Yoo aired, revealing for the first time the dynamic production process and the finished product of Yu Jae-seok's directing debut, the short-form drama "My younger brother stole my woman and I decided to take her back" (abbreviated "DongHoonNaeYeoDaBbat").
That day the members challenged short-form drama production for the first time in history. With Yu Jae-seok taking the megaphone and stepping in as director, HaHa served as writer, Joo Woo-jae as assistant director, and Heo Kyunghwan took on an acting role for the long-awaited first meeting.
The drama "DongHoonNaeYeoDaBbat" contains a shocking plot in which a younger brother eliminates his older brother, steals his lover and the group's succession position, and the brother, who was believed dead, returns alive to begin a brutal revenge. While skimming the script, Heo Kyunghwan discovered the female lead name "Heo In-ok" and loudly protested, "Am I appearing as a woman? What are you doing now?" In response, Yu Jae-seok explained, "We tried to cast someone but it didn't work out. We tried to cast Kim Won-hee but the situation didn't allow it. After much deliberation we decided to make Heo Kyunghwan the female lead," which sent the set into laughter.
In the extreme situation of having to shoot four episodes' worth in a single day, they borrowed the drama set of the daily soap "First Man" and secured ample product placements before beginning full-scale production. Kim Seok-hoon and Kim Sung-kyun were cast as the two male leads and proceeded with script reading. Yu Jae-seok mentioned the tight schedule that filming must finish at 5 p.m., and declared that scenes difficult to realize would be replaced by AI, eliciting roars of laughter. During the script reading, Kim Seok-hoon and Kim Sung-kyun repeatedly gave forced laughter at lines whose unexpected quality surpassed expectations.
A flashy OST lineup also drew attention. "OST queen" Baek Z Young appeared in person. In response to HaHa's composed song "Words of the assassin," Yu Jae-seok produced an AI-created rock ballad-style OST "Words left unfinished to the end," and the members were astonished by Baek Z Young's surprise appearance. Praising HaHa's song, Baek Z Young said, "I liked the song so I listened to it a lot. There aren't many monotone songs. It's the mood of these days. The rhythm is completely sharp," while also self-deprecating, "I'm not good at instincts. When I say I like something, the score doesn't do well. Things I didn't want to do turned out to have good scores," which brought laughs. In the end, Baek Z Young agreed to record both songs, and as HaHa had promised, violinist Danny Gu also participated as a session player, announcing the birth of a high-quality OST.
The ensuing full-scale filming set was nothing short of frantic. Amid the fast-paced on-set atmosphere, Kim Sung-kyun and Kim Seok-hoon struggled to adapt. Although Kim Sung-kyun lamented, "I stammered my lines," Yu Jae-seok showered unlimited praise, saying, "It was the best. Perfect," and mercilessly moved on to the next scene. Even when a flustered Kim Sung-kyun pleaded, "I haven't analyzed the character," Yu Jae-seok tersely replied, "Analyze it while you act," provoking peals of laughter.
In addition, actual remarks by Hwang Jung-min that were accidentally encountered during last week's filming were effectively used as drama lines, and a stingy behind-the-scenes moment was revealed when meals were eaten from packed lunches brought in instead of the food truck. In particular, Jung jun-ha nonchalantly played multiple roles—secretary, the female lead's mother, a doctor and a detective—demonstrating scene-stealing performance, and the actors managed to complete filming while holding back their laughter.
The full version of "DongHoonNaeYeoDaBbat," completed after the actors' and crew's tearful struggle, can be viewed on the Hangout With Yoo official YouTube channel.
