The play Matryoshka, which showcases the essence of a "B-grade realism comedy," is building momentum at the box office by releasing character posters that highlight its chaotic chemistry.
The play Matryoshka, which has been spreading by word of mouth thanks to the stellar cast's passionate performances and a solid script, will meet audiences at Myeongbo Art Hall Raon Hall in Euljiro, Seoul, through Jan. 3, 2027. Meanwhile, on the 8th the official social media released the final set of seven "character pair posters," each capturing the seven cast members' distinct charms. This poster release is expected to further heighten audience anticipation.
The released posters grab attention by using blunt copy to convey the crises the cash-strapped small theater troupe "Matryoshka" members face onstage and their inner thoughts.
The conceited director Nam Dong-jin's cry of "Do you know mise-en-scène? Do you know aesthetics?" and the troupe's senior Kwak Yong-jun responding, "What aesthetics? This is just a school recital!" provoke realistic laughter. Also, the members' angry exclamations such as "Now you want me to even act like a doberman?" and "How can we continue this crappy acting!" stir curiosity about the "S-grade showdown" they will present.
Assistant director Joo Da-in's apologetic line, "I'm sorry, but another sorry thing happened, sorry," and newcomer actress Lee Hye-su's vivid complaint, "Is theater normally this recklessly brutal?" are also points that will resonate with audiences. Added to this are the Han family members' offbeat lines that serve as the play's energy, promising nonstop "belly-laugh" fun.
The producer said, "This pair poster cleverly captures moments of a 'total chaos party' in which each character's unique chemistry and their fragile mental states are shattered," expressing strong confidence in the perfect ensemble that veteran actors Son Jong-hak, Yoon Je-moon, Jung Seok-yong, Jo Hee-bong, Tae Hang-ho and others will present.
