Actor Ki Eun-se apologized after a controversy arose over residents' complaints during the remodeling work of a single-family house in Pyeongchang-dong. However, because she communicated directly with residents and followed up with apologies and measures, some voices say excessive criticism should be restrained.
Earlier last month a resident, a person surnamed A, complained on social media about the inconvenience caused by Ki Eun-se's construction of a single-family house in Pyeongchang-dong. The resident said, "With construction continuing for months, the alley is occupied by construction vehicles so that it is difficult for even one car to pass," and pointed out, "Construction waste and dust are severe, and cleaning is not being done properly."
The resident complained, "At first they said it would be finished in mid-April, but now they have changed their words to mid-May or that they don't know when it will end," and strongly protested, "Isn't this a sense of privilege to try to shrug this off because they are a celebrity?"
Earlier Ki Eun-se said on her YouTube channel that she was moving to a single-family house in Pyeongchang-dong. At the time she explained that "the house is too old so the facilities must be checked carefully from the start," and said she was undertaking major remodeling work. She expressed satisfaction with the natural scenery, high ceiling, and terrace space, saying it felt "like building a house."
As the controversy grew, Ki Eun-se's side immediately apologized. Her agency, Sublime, said, "About two weeks ago we became aware of some residents' complaints about parking and cleaning, then offered direct apologies and took measures for neighborhood cleaning and vehicle traffic." It added, "We are still organizing the site and surroundings every day and paying attention to maintaining cleanliness."
The resident also said in an additional post that "I received an apology direct message from the person involved." However, the resident later again pointed out problems with construction vehicles and expressed discomfort, saying "the willingness to improve seems lacking."
Eventually the site manager visited in person to talk with residents, and as promises were made to improve parking and garbage problems the conflict gradually subsided. The resident also said, "I hope the construction is completed well with mutual consideration from now on without anyone losing face." Later Ki Eun-se's side reiterated, "The construction is currently proceeding without additional complaints, and the contractor is also communicating steadily with residents."
Online reactions are mixed. Some pointed out, "Isn't it that celebrities take surrounding harm lightly?" and "basic consideration should come first in construction." On the other hand, many said, "Schedules can be delayed because of the nature of construction," and "because an apology and measures have been taken, excessive criticism should be restrained."
In the end this controversy goes beyond the "celebrity construction nuisance" debate and once again highlights the importance of consideration and communication between neighbors.<
