Hollywood legend Helena Bonham Carter suddenly left the popular series White Lotus (The White Lotus) season 4 due to a "difference in acting views" with director Mike White, shocking many.
On the 5th (local time), Variety reported that Helena Bonham Carter left the set in France just nine days after season 4 filming began. The decisive reason for her departure was reported to be a disagreement with director Mike White.
Variety reported that Bonham Carter experienced a "creative difference" with director Mike White. The director asked her for a more "boisterous" performance, but that did not match Bonham Carter's interpretation. In the series, Bonham Carter was expected to play a washed-up star dreaming of a comeback.
An HBO spokesperson said, "It became clear after filming began that the character Mike White had set and Bonham Carter's approach to the role were not aligned," adding, "The production and the director regret not being able to work with the legendary actor, but we look forward to meeting her again on another project soon."
Laura Dern, another acclaimed actor, fills Bonham Carter's spot. Notably, Dern will not be taking over Bonham Carter's role as is. Director Mike White reportedly wrote an entirely new character for Laura Dern.
Laura Dern previously had a voice role in season 2 of White Lotus and has worked with director Mike White on his drama Enlightened, adding to expectations as one of the director's personas.
Set at a luxurious resort on the French Riviera, White Lotus season 4 is being filmed against the backdrop of the Cannes Film Festival. The season's production budget is reported to be an unprecedented $120 million (about 160 billion won).
The cast is also star-studded. Notable stars joining include Rosie Perez, Max Greenfield, Kumail Nanjiani, Chloe Bennet, Heather Graham, and Steve Coogan.
