(Following interview ①) Actor Kim Jaewon revealed behind-the-scenes stories about the details of the work, from his apology to Maltese dog owners that caused a stir early in Yumi's Cells 3 to the carp-shaped pastry kiss scene.
Kim Jaewon conducted an interview on the morning of the 7th at a café in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul. In that setting he met with domestic reporters and talked about the recently concluded, popular TVING original series Yumi's Cells 3.
Yumi's Cells 3 is a cell-stimulating, relatable romantic drama in which Yumi, now a star writer, once again laughs, cries and falls in love because of an unexpected person who arrives like a bolt from the blue in her otherwise uneventful daily life. Based on the popular webtoon of the same name, the franchise opened with its first season in 2021, and Kim Jaewon delivered a passionate performance as Shin Sun-rok, the male lead in season 3.
Kim Yu-mi (played by Kim Go-eun), Shin Sun-rok (played by Kim Jaewon) and not only them but the cells of the major characters are important in the Yumi's Cells series, and Kim Jaewon laughed, I really like Sun-rok's rational cell. It's my favorite cell. He explained, Contrary to the wording 'rational cell,' it seemed drained and listless, and that way of speaking was very cute. Those traits seemed to be parts that could express Sun-rok's low-energy state.
He continued, I couldn't see the cells while acting, but when I first saw them, I only saw them in text, so seeing how the cells would appear in season 3 when I first encountered them on the drama, they were very cute and they felt like entities that would represent Sun-rok's heart, so they were reassuring. The lecherous cell was bigger than I imagined. Seeing it in the drama. Watching those cells, I thought it might have been a part that well captured the charm of a younger man, he said with a laugh, and I also like the fashion cell, the great detective cell and the love cell among Yumi's cells. They're all so cute.
Furthermore, he emphasized, My prime cell now seems to be the rational cell. In work, I can't be 10% synchronized with Sun-rok, but when I work I try to exclude emotion as much as possible and focus on tasks rationally. I think it's an important time to take steps in work one by one, so I'm trying to stay as rational and not let go of the reins of reason as much as possible.
As a result of the rational cell being his prime cell, Shin Sun-rok and Kim Yu-mi begin a 'hate-love' romance early in the drama due to differing views on Maltese dogs. Shin Sun-rok made Kim Yu-mi flare up by asking, Don't Maltese dogs even eat feces? Nationwide Maltese dog owner viewers who saw this even left cute scolding comments on Kim Jaewon's social media. In response, Kim Jaewon created a playful incident by apologizing directly on social media.
Regarding this, Kim Jaewon said, I did my best filming. I didn't expect so many people with Maltese profile photos to rush over. I actually received it pleasantly. Isn't it amusing? It wasn't a huge incident, and I felt it was proof that people watched the drama well, so I posted on social media. I want to take this opportunity to say that Maltese dogs are the cutest. Lately I even pet Maltese dogs on the street one more time for no reason, he joked.
He also named his favorite episode, I like the ending of episode 6. After Sun-rok fights fiercely with writer Kim Ju-ho (played by Choi Daniel) and then runs toward Kim Ju-ho as if to confront him, it turns out to be writer Yumi's studio and the scene where he expresses feelings he didn't even know he had and comes to realize them. I paid special attention. It felt like the first time Sun-rok confessed to someone in his life, so I entered that scene after a lot of analysis and conversation, he revealed.
Meanwhile, Kim Jaewon awkwardly laughed about the strawberry cream carp-shaped pastry that is indispensable to the romance between Shin Sun-rok and Kim Yu-mi, saying, I think the real reason Sun-rok bought all the pastry so that Yumi couldn't eat it at first was not really a big reason. It was simply that Sun-rok liked strawberry cream carp-shaped pastry that much, and because he's a homebody you never know when he might leave the house; I think it was that simple a reason.
He also said about the strawberry cream carp-shaped pastry kiss scene that became a topic in the middle of the series, I was very, very satisfied. I heard the carp-shaped pastry kiss became a topic, and I thought, how can something so harmless make you swoon like this? I was surprised to the extent of wondering how people could think so much over a single pastry. I didn't expect it either, but Sun-rok biting the tail so the pastry's mouth touches Yumi's cheek felt more thrilling than a real kiss. Even watching the drama I felt very excited. Once again I admired the direction and the writing. My legs actually went weak. Because I was immersed, after Sun-rok did the pastry kiss I found myself wiping my lips without realizing it. It wasn't even a real kiss. I felt that was the moment I had been immersed in Sun-rok. That surprised me too, he said.
