The nation's father' Choi Bul-am's image as the 'father of the world' is expected to be conveyed through the documentary.
On the 5th, MBC documentary 'Paha, Choi Bul-am' aired its first broadcast.
A friend of the common people, a living witness to modern Korean history, and an icon of Korean popular culture. The MBC special 'Paha, Choi Bul-am', which captures the life and works of Choi Bul-am, who has drawn the rings of the times with performances that span generations, painted a portrait of an era beyond merely documenting an actor.
The broadcast revealed footage from his young days, when he began acting at Myeongdong Theater in 1955, up to appearances in the 2009 SBS special, evoking deep nostalgia. In particular, he was an actor who mostly played roles of elderly people much older than his actual age, and it is reported that the background to that was his childhood experience living with his maternal grandfather and observing people.
In fact, he performed roles that transcended age, such as the uncle of the late Shin Seong-il, who was three years older than him, and the father of Lee Soon-jae, who was five years older.
The secret of that acting was, after all, "people." In one interview Choi Bul-am said, "The elderly are beautiful. We should respect their positions and learn wisdom from them." His warm gaze toward people made his acting deeper and more persuasive.
Choi Bul-am, who challenged directing as well as acting and made a mark on Korean acting history. The journey from the father in drama to becoming the "father of the world" brought poignant emotion.
In particular, the second episode, 'eternal father,' drew attention to his life that continued off screen. Rather than a simple image, scenes of his actually practicing warm good deeds and sharing were revealed, raising expectations for the so-called "Choi Bul-am effect."
Meanwhile, this documentary is an autobiographical project in which Choi Bul-am participated from the planning stage. Since last year he repeatedly engaged in lengthy conversations with the production team, personally considering the work and its message, and wanted it to capture changes in Korean society beyond an individual's life. However, at his family's request to focus on rehabilitation treatment, he did not stand in front of the camera. The production team said, "Although he did not appear, the message the actor wanted to convey is contained throughout the documentary."
MBC documentary 'Paha, Choi Bul-am' met viewers as a two-part series, airing on the 5th and again on the 12th at 9 p.m.
