Comedian Yang Sang-guk's "rigid" views on dating are spreading beyond entertainment laughs into controversy. Remarks that kick away a rolling Yu Jae-seok line (Yu Jae-seok line) are provoking criticism.
On the 2nd, the YouTube channel 'TteunTteun' web variety show 'Pinggego' featured Yu Jae-seok, Nam Chang Hee, Han Sang-jin and Yang Sang-guk discussing various topics.
That day the newlywed Nam Chang Hee said, "I prepare breakfast for my wife every morning and see her off," and Yu Jae-seok likewise praised him, saying, "Even newlyweds have it tough." But Yang Sang-guk's reaction was different. He said, "That's dangerous. Dating is similar," and "My principle is I won't give something unless I'm going to do it for life," revealing a firm view on dating.
The problem was not the "thought" but the "method." Yang Sang-guk repeatedly emphasized remarks focused on his own standards and measures, saying, "I've never taken a girlfriend home," and "They're not at the age to be dating," and even when Yu Jae-seok tried to advise to smooth things over, he shot back, "That's not it," and "Say it one more time and I'll scold you," freezing the atmosphere.
Even his habit of addressing Yu Jae-seok throughout the broadcast as "Mr. Yu Jae-seok" added to perceptions among some viewers that it was rude beyond an "entertainment character." Nearby, Han Sang-jin watched the situation and quipped, "Is this your farewell broadcast today?" and "Having a regular spot won't be easy," a joke that left an odd aftertaste that could not be consumed as mere laughter.
Reactions after the broadcast were mixed. Some said, "I like the honesty," and "It's a character," but negative responses have been louder, such as, "Yu Jae-seok keeps saving him but he pushes it all away," "Yang Sang-guk is worrisome," and "It feels like kicking away the luck of a rolling 'Yu line.'"
Although Yang Sang-guk has emerged as a trend by showing presence on You Quiz on the Block and Omniscient Interfering View, ironically this remark revealed the risks of being a regular on variety shows. Certainly, his strong Gyeongsang-do dialect and blunt speaking style are distinctiveness. However, in variety shows the line between "character" and "attitude" is even more important. Even if it was a setup aimed at laughs, the moment respect for the other is lacking, it can be perceived not as a character but as "discomfort."
Yang Sang-guk, who was rowing the oars of popularity to the point of appearing on 'Hangout With Yoo' and 'You Quiz on the Block.' Will he continue the opportunity of the freshly gained "Yu line," or will this controversy trip him up? Yang Sang-guk's next move is drawing more attention.
