Hollywood actor Ian Somerhalder said he fell into debt exceeding ten million dollars after retiring from acting.
On the 30th, U.S. outlet Variety reported that Ian Somerhalder recently told E! News in an interview that after retiring from acting he and his family barely escaped a debt burden in the eight figures (ten million dollars, about 14.7 billion won).
Ian Somerhalder became known for his role as Boone Carlyle in the drama "Lost" and later gained great popularity playing Damon Salvatore in the drama "The Vampire Diaries".
He said, "I retired from acting seven years ago," noting that one of the reasons he had to leave a once-highly profitable television career was a "financial upheaval."
He explained, "After experiencing a financial upheaval from a business that wasn't properly built, I left a television career that was generating enormous revenue. On top of that, after being scammed, my wife and I fell into an eight-figure debt pit. Eight-figure debt is a hole that's hard to get out of. But Nikki and I did it. My wife negotiated to get us out of this situation, but we had to sell everything—our house, paintings, cars, watches, everything."
He added, "I should have retired after finishing one of the biggest TV shows in the world instead of starting companies that might never generate revenue for me in my lifetime."
Earlier, Somerhalder retired from acting after the 2020 Netflix series V Wars was canceled. He later told People in an interview that his Hollywood career is "in the rearview mirror (something that's already passed)," making it unlikely he will act again.
He said of his decision to stop acting, "I want to do what I do now far more than stay apart from my family and spend two months in some city filming a TV show or carting the family around," adding, "I don't need to chase any award or anything that will make me feel better about myself anymore."
Meanwhile, Ian Somerhalder married actress Nikki Reed, who appeared in the 2015 film "Twilight."
