A case in which a teenage daughter tried to give 200 million won to her academy teacher after killing her mother is shocking.
On June 1, the sixth episode of tcast E Channel's Brave Detective 5 (directed by Lee Ji-seon) featured Superintendent Lee Gyeong-ro of Bupyeong Police Station's women and juvenile investigation team, former Commissioner Yoon Oe-chul of the Korea Scientific Investigation (KCSI), and Officer Kim Jin Soo, who revealed investigation logs.
The first case introduced that day was a shocking murder that occurred in a household, which began when the eldest daughter called 119 saying, "My mother is not breathing." At the scene, a woman in her mid-40s was found lying face down on the bed dead; there were no external injuries, but there was a round bloodstain where the dark floral-patterned mattress touched. Sleeping pills were found in the master bedroom, but the autopsy showed the cause of death was asphyxiation from the nose and mouth being blocked.
When checked with the husband, there had been family conflicts over the eldest daughter's academy issues. The eldest daughter had dropped out of high school aiming for Seoul National University and attended an expensive academy costing up to 4 million won a month; she had clashed with her mother who opposed it. Above all, inconsistencies were found in the mother-in-law's movements when she returned home on the day of the incident and in the eldest daughter's statements. The decisive clue was the bed sheet. Officers who noticed the missing sheet confirmed through the National Forensic Service that the sheet the eldest daughter had washed had bloodstains in the same position as the mattress. The victim's DNA was also detected. The person who staged the scene to look like a sleeping pill overdose was the victim's eldest daughter, Ms. Choi (alias).
The investigation expanded to the academy. The academy was run by a family, and the eldest daughter attended a special class run by Vice Principal Jang (alias). In the process, it emerged that the vice principal took kickbacks, which strained his relationship with the principal, and the vice principal even attacked the principal with a baseball bat when he came to see him. The father said Ms. Choi became a completely different person while studying under the vice principal. When his wife stopped her from attending, the eldest daughter ran away and did not contact home for months. Later, on the condition of contact, she rented a one-room near the academy but lived and ate there with the vice principal and other students. During that time, the principal was assaulted and the mother asked the principal to help bring her daughter home, and Ms. Choi then returned home.
After the mother's funeral, Ms. Choi even told her father that they should sell the house to make 200 million won and give it to the teacher. The case led to another murder. Seven months after the incident, the academy principal went missing, and vehicle investigations and witness statements revealed that Jang stabbed the principal with a weapon and Ms. Choi assisted. Jang said he was angry because the principal's suspicion that he had been involved in the murder of Ms. Choi's mother sounded like a threat. Ms. Choi said she merely accepted the teacher's proposal.
Regarding the motive for killing her mother and the principal, Ms. Choi said, "I wanted to go to Seoul National University," and "my mother said it was because of money," but she insisted, "the teacher is not guilty," and defended Jang to the end. Profiler Kwon Il-yong analyzed, "They find psychological vulnerabilities, support and groom the person, and gaslight them, which leads to absolute trust." During the trial, fake news insulting the police and the father was created by Ms. Choi's younger sibling and students who followed Jang. It was revealed that this was instructed by Jang. Both Jang and Ms. Choi were sentenced to 20 years in prison.
