'You Quiz on the Block' comedian Yang Sang-guk expressed longing for his father.
On the 29th episode of tvN 'You Quiz on the Block' (hereinafter 'You Quiz'), Yang Sang-guk, who is enjoying a second heyday as the 'prince of Gimhae,' appeared. Dressed in a tall, neat style, Yang Sang-guk waved his hand gracefully, and unable to stand it, Yu Jae-seok quietly said, "This is not the place,". Then Yang Sang-guk, with a pained look, said, "You told me to do Prince Charles's hairstyle and now you tell me to be Yang Sang-guk, what am I supposed to do?", bringing laughter.
Yu Jae-seok asked, "How did you feel when you heard you were invited to appear on 'You Quiz'?" Yang Sang-guk was a KBS 22nd class open-recruit comedian who raised his recognition through consistent appearances on Gag Concert. However, after Gag Concert he did not have any notable hits and, unlike many fellow seniors and juniors, continued a quiet broadcasting career.
Yu Jae-seok asked, "These days, does your mother like it?" Yang Sang-guk said, "I haven't had a hit in 10 years. So I did everything I could," and explained that because he is Yang Sang-guk who appears everywhere, there are many materials left. Yang Sang-guk said, "She really likes it," and added, "At first she said she needed Yu Jae-seok's autograph, but now within the Gimhae royal household my recognition has risen so she says she needs my autograph," he said.
Yang Sang-guk's regret was his father's absence. Yang Sang-guk said, "My father was a taxi driver and always listened to traffic radio," and said, "After my father passed away, when a traffic radio invitation came the next year I thought, 'If my father were alive he would have listened to this radio every day,'" he said.
Yang Sang-guk said, "If my father had been alive, I would have really called him and asked, 'How is the traffic in Gimhae, are the roads congested?' I wish my father could have heard it. I would have been very filial to my father," and added, "Even while driving a taxi he never once boasted about his son. He was afraid that if he made a slip of the tongue it would harm his son, so even when someone said, 'He's Yang Sang-guk's dad,' he wouldn't speak," lamenting his father's kindness and humility.
His father, who died during the COVID period, had to be cremated immediately because of the quarantine conditions at the time. His mother was in quarantine and his elder brother was in the United States. Yang Sang-guk somehow was able to see his father. However, his father was wrapped in a plastic bag, and his siblings had to wear protective suits to witness the encoffining.
Yang Sang-guk said, "My heart ached that my father was placed in a plastic bag. I couldn't dress him in burial clothes. That hurt my heart."
What stood by him were his contemporaries. In particular, Heo Kyunghwan and Kim Won-hyo's catchphrases brought laughter on the way to send off his father. Yang Sang-guk said, "My father liked my contemporaries, so while waiting for the first car he asked them to perform their catchphrases once," and added, "When Park Joonhyung senior sent a wreath I told them to just leave it, but when Yu Jae-seok senior sent a wreath I had them bring it inside. The entertainment president sent a wreath," he concluded the talk with his wit.
