Broadcaster Shin Jung-hwan spoke about his life after past controversies.
On the 29th, a new video was released on the YouTube channel Human Story titled "Why singer Shin Jung-hwan, who was doing well, works at a restaurant after 16 years of self-reflection."
That day Shin Jung-hwan introduced himself, "I debuted as a singer and have been Shin Jung-hwan for about 32 years. People think I debuted as a comedian through open recruitment, but I debuted as a singer."
He said, "When I was first contacted, I couldn't readily say 'yes, I'll try' because I recently opened a restaurant. I worried that opening it would make it look like I'm saying 'come eat here.' I was going to quietly run the restaurant diligently, but I thought it might be good to show that I'm living earnestly. I wanted to greet people and show how I'm living," and explained the reason for appearing.
Although he is a broadcaster with 32 years of experience, Shin Jung-hwan, who said there was a long gap in the middle, said, "For about 10 years I was hardly seen. It was exactly about 16 years; I even ran a shaved-ice shop abroad and my whereabouts surfaced little by little."
In particular, the car Shin Jung-hwan was driving is a compact car. Shin Jung-hwan recalled, "When I was young I drove many good cars. I probably drove a white Benz as maybe the second person while Andre Kim was still alive. When you went to some department stores they would think it was Mr. Ahn and open the rear door for him."
He added, "Now I'm not at the age to drive to look cool for someone. But driving this car is very comfortable. I get many benefits, and parking is very convenient. People who finish work late go crazy over parking, and it's so convenient then," he boasted.
Reflecting on his long period of self-reflection, Shin Jung-hwan said, "Because I brought it on myself and made my youth like that, I avoided crowded places and sat with my back turned even in restaurants. So my acquaintances and family have made that a way of life. In the past my family and acquaintances suffered more," adding, "My parents went through a lot."
When they arrived at Shin Jung-hwan's restaurant, it was packed with people. He said, "I started by making the dishes I like. Running a food business isn't easy. I felt I shouldn't entrust the business to someone else when I don't know much about it," and about current sales he admitted, "I was surprised. It's been about a month and a half since opening and monthly sales reached 100 million won. I didn't promote that I was operating it, but neighborhood people came to find it."
Meanwhile, Shin Jung-hwan was sentenced to prison in 2010 on charges of overseas gambling, and he suspended activities after controversies over lying about dengue fever grew.
