Group CRAVITY faces the world's fears and takes another step forward with their eighth mini album ReDeFINE.
CRAVITY releases mini album No. 8, ReDeFINE, on the 29th and begins full-scale comeback activities. This album most vividly depicts the present moment where CRAVITY stands, capturing youth that shines not because it is perfect but because it falters and keeps moving forward.
CRAVITY recently held an interview at the Starship Entertainment building in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, to commemorate the release of their new mini album No. 8, ReDeFINE, and discussed the album.
Seongmin said the album's message is not about youth that shines because it is perfect but about moments of getting back up even if you falter and collapse, and explained that it was a very important point for CRAVITY on their sixth anniversary, saying the motto was the will to get up and try again whether things go well or not, so those aspects were chosen as album keywords.
In particular, the concept that runs throughout the album is the snake biting its own tail, the uroboros. Hyeongjun said he used the uroboros as a metaphor to redefine "the end is the beginning," and expressed confidence, saying the album captures our present in which, although it may look to others like we are circling the same spot, we are infinitely expanding and growing within it.
The music video and performance for the title track "AWAKE" incorporate the elements of horror that the members are actually most afraid of. Hyeongjun said they surveyed the members on what each person feels is frightening when filming the music video and tried to express that in the performance. Seongmin, who answered that he is most afraid of "insects," used CGI work to bring out details such as bite marks on his hand from a snake; Jeongmo said he wrote that he was afraid of changes in daily life and of the youth spent with members disappearing, so scenes of playing with school friends were included. Minhee also honestly confessed that he wrote the approaching reality is the scariest and that because he strongly wanted to go all the way with people he loves, he was able to immerse himself while answering the question.
Serim and Allen, who participated in writing the lyrics for "AWAKE," actively used characteristics of snakes and reptiles in the lyrics. Allen explained that based on the symbol of the uroboros and taking note that reptiles are cold-blooded, he intentionally included direct words like "Cold blood", "Bite me", and "bite with fangs," and Serim added that he wrote his rap focusing on the point of "swallowing the end" and "there is no end in my design."
The new release is also densely packed with the members' further developed musical abilities. Member Taeyoung presents his first self-composed song since debut with track No. 5, "Love Me Like You Do." Taeyoung said the song is very meaningful because it was made in a first session with other composer seniors, and he felt good that it was born into a cool song when heard with the members' voices.
The fan song Spring, with You, which Allen and Wonjin participated in writing and composing, drew great attention after a special video was pre-released on the 14th to commemorate their sixth anniversary. Wonjin said he started with the wish that fans, who are most exhausted by time spent apart, would not lose their smiles since those smiles give great strength when they meet in person, and sincerely expressed that he wanted fans to remain exactly as they remember them, like the lyrics "Even if you wither and dry up, my spring is you." Allen showed affection, saying spring is the season they debuted and the meaningful season when they first met fans, and that he wrote it so the debuting spring day would always come to mind.
