It has already been 18 years since Monday Kiz member the late Kim Minsu died in a motorcycle accident. Music fans still remember and miss his voice.
The late Kim Minsu was riding a motorcycle toward the Sillim-dong intersection in Gwanak District, Seoul, at about 6:24 a.m. on April 29, 2008, when he crashed head-on into a streetlight. He was taken to a hospital after the accident but ultimately died. He was 23.
At the time of the accident, the head of the traffic accident team at the Gwanak Mountain precinct said, "The report came into the precinct. A bus driver said he witnessed it. It appears he couldn't make the curve while heading from Seoul National University toward the Sillim intersection and collided directly with a streetlight," he said. According to police, the late Kim Minsu was not intoxicated at the time of the accident and was wearing a helmet.
The sudden news of the accident left colleagues in the music industry and fans in deep shock and sorrow. In particular, the late Kim Minsu had just released Monday Kiz's third album, "Inside Story," and was actively promoting it, which made the incident all the more tragic.
At the time, Monday Kiz's manager said, "A six-city tour was scheduled to start at the end of June. We released a new album in April and the reaction was good, so we were excited and happy, but I can't believe something like this happened," expressing his regret.
The late Kim Minsu had suffered a traffic accident the year before his death and had been hospitalized for about six months and completed rehabilitation. At that time, after finishing recording songs for the third album, he was riding his motorcycle home to his Hapjeong-dong residence when he collided with a passenger car and underwent surgery for a torn cruciate ligament and damage to the lateral and medial meniscus in his knee.
The late Kim Minsu debuted in 2005 with Monday Kiz's first album, "Bye Bye Bye." He was loved for his distinctive mid- to low-range husky voice and excellent singing ability, which were considered attractive. After Kim Minsu's death, Monday Kiz officially disbanded in November 2008 and stopped using the group name. It later reorganized as a three-member group in 2010, and Lee Jin-seong at one point led Monday Kiz alone.
At the 10th anniversary of the late Kim Minsu's death, Lee Jin-seong said, "I can't believe it's already been 10 years; time really flies. I still keep you as you were at 23. May more people remember you and may your songs resound more loudly in heaven. I'll come see you soon," expressing his longing.
