Comedian Yang Sang-guk shed tears thinking of his father who died from COVID-19.
At the end of the April 22 broadcast of tvN You Quiz on the Block, a preview for next week aired.
In the preview that day, Yang Sang-guk, dressed up to the nines, appeared as a guest and drew attention. In response, Yu Jae-seok laughed, saying, "Really, what, crown prince?" and Yang Sang-guk introduced himself, saying, "I am Yang Sang-guk, reborn as the crown prince of Gimhae," bringing laughter.
Yu Jae-seok said, "Right now, if Yang Sang-guk appears, there is nowhere he doesn't show up," noting his widespread popularity, and Yang Sang-guk asked, "Are there any protests from the public?" then said, "If so, I'll stop this episode myself," taking an extreme measure that sent Yu Jae-seok into fits of laughter.
In response, Yu Jae-seok said, "Ah, this being natural is good," and Yang Sang-guk immediately returned to his original character, saying, "You dress me like this and tell me to act like myself—what am I supposed to do?" adding to the amusement.
In particular, when it was pointed out that although he appears on many variety shows he "has no regular spots," Yang Sang-guk appealed, "They use me once and then they don't use me again," and "I will be loyal to the first director who gives me a regular spot."
On the other hand, when the topic turned to his father who died four years ago, Yang Sang-guk spoke of his heavy heart. He said, "He was put in a plastic bag when he passed away, and that hurt me a little," and shed tears, causing sympathy.
Meanwhile, Yang Sang-guk's father was reported to have died just one day after being infected with COVID-19 in March 2022. Yang Sang-guk revealed this fact on a variety show at the time, saying, "My father had a stroke, and during surgery a cerebral hemorrhage occurred, leaving him with aftereffects so he was in a long-term care hospital, but he died one day after testing positive for COVID-19," and added, "Three years ago my father turned 70, but we didn't hold a 70th birthday party. There is a superstition that if you don't hold a 70th birthday party you'll get sick. I wondered if not having the 70th birthday party led to the stroke, and after he died I thought that might be the reason," expressing regret.
Recalling the funeral, he said, "On the third day of the funeral, when my older brother arrived, I burst into tears. At that time my brother and I went to see father, and he was in a plastic bag instead of a shroud. My brother and I, wearing protective suits, went to put him in the coffin, and I wanted to touch him one last time, but even that was impossible," he said, making everyone feel sorrowful.
