TOMORROW X TOGETHER, NCT WISH, Taeyong, KISS OF LIFE, Hwasa, WJSN Dayoung, Park Jihoon and other high-profile major artists have been making successive comebacks, heating up the April music scene, and the presence of fifth-generation girl groups is also dazzling.
At the center are Hearts2Hearts (Hearts2Hearts) and KiiiKiii (KiiiKiii). The two groups that debuted last year solidified a two-power system representing the fifth generation by pursuing distinct musical directions. They also captured mainstream popularity by settling at the top of digital charts. Hearts2Hearts' "RUDE!" ranked third on Melon TOP100 as of on the 21st, and KiiiKiii's "404 (New Era)" ranked sixth, and both are still enjoying long runs.
UNCHILD, which debuted on the 21st, could be called a new variable of the fifth generation. Launched by HighUP Entertainment about six years after STAYC, the new group has drawn attention from early on. Na Ha-eun, who stamped her mark on the public as a "dance prodigy," and Park Ye-eun, who gained recognition through Mnet's "I-LAND 2," joined to raise the group's presence.
In addition to Na Ha-eun and Park Ye-eun, the six members—leader and main rapper Hiki, China-born Tina, Japan-born Ako, and main vocalist Lee Bon—solidify UNCHILD's distinctive color with strong skills. They delivered impact with bold neon-color visuals and a "school uniform hacking" styling that brazenly twisted elements of school looks. Upon debut, UNCHILD surpassed 1 million followers on its official TikTok, firmly imprinting its name on global fans and proving its firepower.
As team identities and colors become more important these days, UNCHILD rejected ordinariness and launched with a "rule breaker" concept that breaks standardized molds. They redefine the classic space of school as "PUNK SCHOOL" and pour out the Gen Z generation's distinctive unrestrained energy based on quirkiness and unique sensibility. This direction and concept could also be seen in the self-titled debut song "UNCHILD."
At the debut single release showcase for "We Are UNCHILD," held on the 21st, UNCHILD premiered the title track "UNCHILD" on stage for the first time. Members Hiki and Na Ha-eun participated in the choreography, adding dynamic energy, and the killing part "WE ARE UNCHILD" blended to intuitively reveal the team's color. Na Ha-eun, who drew much attention that day, also played the central performer role for the team with her improved stage capabilities.
At the showcase, UNCHILD said, "Because the six of us have distinct and unique personalities, we will break the world more energetically," and expressed a wish, "Like the debut song lyrics, we want to earn the label 'UNCHILD who put an exclamation mark on the world.'" They also expressed their ambition to work hard aiming for rookie awards and announced active promotions.
As a new "eye of the storm" and variable of the fifth generation, whether UNCHILD can maintain its strong initial momentum is drawing attention.
