Epic High's Tablo expressed frustration over being misunderstood as 'phone addicted'.
On the 21st a video titled "Things I want to buy even though my wife will scold me" was uploaded to Tablo's YouTube channel.
That day Tablo said, "The next item I want to buy but my wife will call me stupid is 'dumb phone'. Don't we have smartphones? They're great. You can do email, send texts, watch YouTube, buy things, play games — it's a computer in your hand. It's amazing. But the problem is it eats up too much time," he began.
He explained, "I was truly shocked because there's an app. It predicts how many years of my life I will spend looking at my smartphone. It was really scary. I tried it. It calculates based on screen time and said I would spend another 30 years of my life just looking at my phone. Just looking at the phone. It was terrifying. So I thought: there's so much I need to do. I have to spend time on my day and hours and with my family, and I still want to make more memories, but aren't I spending too much time on the phone? A dumb phone is the opposite of a smartphone. A dumb phone is the phones we used before. Phones that were once called the latest phones. Mostly you can do texting, email, and basic tasks. It prevents endless scrolling. It's a new phone but made exactly for this purpose. To stop so-called "doomscrolling,""
Then addressing his wife Kang Hye-jung he clarified, "Hye-jung, I'm not saying I'll buy it, I'm just talking," and Tablo added, "If I buy this phone I'll send fewer texts. Because I can't watch YouTube, I'll make fewer editing requests. I'll have to run home to turn on my laptop or take it out of my bag and open it to check edits, so I'll request far fewer edits. Then I'll have time, my family will have time, and you all will have time — it's a win-win. So I already preordered it. I don't know the release date but I really preordered it," delivering a twist that drew laughter.
Tablo said, "A dumb phone doesn't need the highest-spec chips, so you spend less money and you can get your time back. I want you and my wife to know I'm sincere. I really want to get time back. You don't know how hard I try. I'm trying not to doomscroll or use social media on the phone. I'm really going to delete all social media apps from my phone so they can't be used at all. There's a second phone at home that has only the social media apps. I need those apps for 'Hey Tablo' postings and updates about Epik Casse and Epik High, don't I? As the sole marketer for Epik High I need those apps. I need to spend time on those apps. But I don't want to spend too much time. The worst is when I'm with my family and at some moment they say, 'Are you listening?' or 'Dad, put your phone down,' it hurts. Sitting with my family I wasn't even half focused, right? Because I was on my phone. You don't know how bitterly they tell me to stop looking at my phone," he lamented.
Still he confessed in exasperation, "They're always on their phones too. They were on their phones, too. After three hours on their phones suddenly they need me. So it hurts," which provoked laughter. He said, "So usually I delete them but something happened. Our producer has to immediately accept collaboration posts when posting to the Epik Casse account and the Instagram 'Hey Tablo' account. But you can't get notifications without the apps on your main phone. So I reinstalled Instagram and everything," and he said he even installed an app that limits social media to 10 minutes to show his effort.
He especially noted, "Of course it can be undone. You can remove the lock or delete the app. That's why a dumb phone is needed. So you don't have to use this method. For notification issues just send a text. Text me that it's up," he said while looking at his phone and expressed shock, "An alert came saying someone requested a reels collaboration while we were talking. How can this happen during filming?"
He went on, "This is what I mean. I can't live like this. It's like this. I'm with my day and that alarm goes off. Then this is what happens to me. For some reason at that exact moment the whole family needs me," he complained, adding more laughter. He added, "Phone addiction is a really big problem. I think we need to think about it now."
Meanwhile Tablo married actress Kang Hye-jung in 2009 and they have a daughter, Haru.
