Actor Moon Geun-young beat a rare disease and returned in good health.
Debuting in the 1999 film "On the Road", Moon Geun-young drew attention as the nation's beloved "national younger sister" after appearing in films such as 'A Good Lawyer's Wife', 'A Tale of Two Sisters', 'The Girl's Crush', 'Dancer's Pure Heart' and in drama such as drama and 'Autumn in My Heart' and 'Empress Myeongseong'.
However, Moon Geun-young complained of a sudden pain in her right arm in February 2017, and it was revealed to be an emergency condition called "acute compartment syndrome," in which blood flow to muscles and nerve tissue decreases below a certain level and pressure within the compartment continues to rise.
It causes severe pain and paralysis, and if not treated in time it can cause muscle and nerve necrosis, requiring urgent care, so Moon Geun-young underwent four surgeries after onset to focus on treatment, and at the end she recovered her health and returned to her work.
She showed a noticeably heavier appearance than before, and when wearing short sleeves the surgical scars were visible, showing the aftereffects of acute compartment syndrome. But Moon Geun-young did not lose heart and worked hard to return to acting, and as a result she returned to viewers by appearing in the KBS Drama Special 2021 "Memory's Shell" broadcast in 2021 and in the Netflix "Hellbound 2" released in 2024.
At the "Hellbound 2" production press conference, Moon Geun-young said, "More people worried about my health than I expected. I have been completely treated and am now very, very healthy," adding, "Although I have put on a little weight, I'm watching my pack-pok videos every day and dieting, so I hope you cheer for my diet success instead of worrying about my health now."
Moon Geun-young, who was balancing work and dieting, announced her appearance in the play 'Orphans' running at Daehangno TioM from the 10th of last month to May 31, and she broadened her range of activities by appearing on tvN's 'You Quiz on the Block', marking a rare appearance on a variety show.
In a recently released pre-release video, in response to Yu Jae-seok's question, "I don't think you've been able to properly eat what you wanted to eat all this time. Did the doctor tell you during rehabilitation to eat everything you want and do everything you want?", Moon Geun-young replied, "That's right. The doctor said, 'Because of your diet you haven't been able to eat what you wanted all this time. Now eat everything. That will help you recover faster.'"
Moon Geun-young, who said she ate popcorn first, said, "It was my wish to eat popcorn while watching a movie in a theater. I ate the largest size, a combo mixing caramel and cheese flavors, and came out. I was so happy. I thought, 'Ah, this is what movies taste like,'" adding, "My mother always says when she cooks, 'You eat deliciously. There's a taste in how I make it.'"
Moon Geun-young, who surprised people with the rare disease called acute compartment syndrome and evoked sympathy for the pain of the treatment process, had a smile on her face after ending an 18-year diet and returning in good health, and the public watching her also expressed hopes for her continued health, creating a warm atmosphere.
