The truth surrounding the death of the late director Kim Chang-min is reexamined on The Curious Story Y.
On the 17th, SBS' The Curious Story Y will probe the truth behind director Kim Chang-min's death. In particular, it is drawing attention by saying it contains the bereaved family's heartfelt feelings.
Director Kim Chang-min entered the film industry in 2013 by participating in the film The Suspect as a props team member. He worked on productions such as Capt. Kim Chang-su, The Drug King, and The Witch as part of the art team, and he directed independent films including The Daughter of No One, Exit 3 of Guyui Station, Boiler, and Reply, making his mark in the independent film scene. In particular, The Daughter of No One drew attention when it won the director's award at the police human rights film festival in 2016.
It was reported that Director Kim Chang-min recently died after saving four new lives through organ donation last month. It was about four months after he was declared brain dead in November last year. As mourning from the film community and the public continued, shock arose when it was later revealed that his death was the result of collective assault.
It was even reported that the late director had been solely responsible for a son with severe developmental disabilities during his lifetime. On the day of the incident, Director Kim Chang-min reportedly was dining with his son when the perpetrators became involved in an altercation at the restaurant and assaulted him in a group in front of his son. The bereaved family met with The Curious Story Y production team, saying they would uncover the truth surrounding Director Kim Chang-min's death.
"It's a death case, yet the arrest warrant was dismissed. Where in the world is there such a law?" a bereaved family member vigorously appealed to The Curious Story Y production team about the unfairness of the sloppy investigation.
The actual incident occurred at around 1 a.m. on Oct. 20 last year at a restaurant in Guri, Gyeonggi Province, where Director Kim Chang-min had gone to eat with his son. At the time, Director Kim Chang-min got into an argument over noise with men at another table, which escalated into a physical fight. In particular, the store's CCTV footage shocked viewers by showing a man choking Kim from behind, causing him to collapse, and another man dragging the already fallen Kim Chang-min across the floor and out of the frame.
However, the bereaved family later received unexpected news from the police. In the first result of the police investigation, the assault was treated as mutual, and only one suspect was identified. After supplementary investigations, the number of suspects became two, but even the arrest warrants were dismissed. This raised controversy over a sloppy investigation, but the police denied there were any problems.
In the end, the suspects were investigated without detention. During that time the bereaved family cried twice. The suspect Lee claimed, "When it was first reported, it was true that I assaulted and did one incident. But other details kept being reported that were not true," according to his statement. A close associate of Lee also appealed to The Curious Story Y production team to correct facts. He stood directly in front of The Curious Story Y production team's camera.
This is not the first time Lee has appeared before the public. He previously appeared with acquaintances who were present at the assault on the personal channel of YouTuber Karakula. The content was an apology, but instead it provoked public outrage for lacking sincerity by apologizing through YouTube rather than to the bereaved family. Viewers are curious about what other stories The Curious Story Y will bring up.
