Actor Kim Jaewon apologized to Maltese owners nationwide over a line in Yumi's Cells 3.
On the 17th, the TVing original Yumi's Cells season 3 (directed by Lee Sang-yeop, written by Song Jae-jung and Kim Kyung-ran) posted on social media a message and video saying, "To Maltese owners nationwide, owner ㅈ and Sunrook.. same feelings.. love for Maltese."
The video contains Kim Jaewon's voice directly apologizing to Maltese owners. Kim Jaewon said, "Hello. I am Shin Sunrook. I sincerely apologize for causing great concern and anger to Coco and Maltese friends across the country and the caregivers who love Maltese, including writer Yumi, after receiving numerous materials and testimonies and claims of 'our Anne never does that' due to my recent remark, 'Don't Maltese even eat poop?'"
He added, "All of this happened because I find Maltese so, so cute and love them, and that led to this. I promise to work to restore the honor of Maltese from now on."
Earlier, in episode 1 of Yumi's Cells 3, Sunrook (played by Kim Jaewon) asked Yumi (played by Kim Go-eun) without malice, "Don't Maltese even eat poop?" and then casually hung up saying a car had arrived. At the moment Sunrook said that line, Yumi covered the ears of the dog sitting on her lap and made an incredulous, angry face, drawing laughter.
The line angered Maltese owners nationwide, and owners left comments such as "They don't eat poop" and "They briefly tasted it out of curiosity when young but stopped it long ago."
Previously, on the 15th Kim Jaewon apologized on his personal social media saying, "I am sorry to Maltese owners across the country," and his live-voice apology elicited chuckles.
Meanwhile, Yumi's Cells is a drama adapted from the popular webtoon of the same name, and in season 3 it depicts a cell-stimulating, relatable romance about laughing, crying and falling in love again when an unexpected person suddenly appears in the unstimulating everyday life of Yumi, who has become a star writer.
