Yeon Sang-ho's new film "Gunche," which opens on May 21, released photos from the set.
"Gunche" is a film about survivors trapped inside a building sealed off by an unidentified infection who confront infected people that evolve into unpredictable forms. The publicity stills released on the 17th depict survivors trying to survive a dire situation and infected people attacking them.
First, a still of Kwon Se-jung (Jun Ji-hyun), holding a cellphone and a flashlight and looking at someone with a desperate expression, draws attention. The text on the cellphone raises curiosity about whom she is messaging and what pattern of the infected she has identified. Seo Young-chul (Koo Kyo-hwan), the person responsible for causing the infection, is completely opposed to the survivors including Kwon Se-jung. A still showing Seo Young-chul endlessly reflected in a mirror adds to the mystery of his inscrutable motives. Next, a still of Choi Hyun-seok (Ji Changwook), who carries his sister Choi Hyun-hee (Kim Shin-rock) on a camping frame and leads the survivors holding a pole, conveys his desperation to protect his sister.
Meanwhile, biotechnologist Gong Seol-hee (Shin Hyun-been) watches the situation from outside the building and struggles to resolve the infection. The image of Gong Seol-hee investigating the laboratory in protective gear raises expectations for her willingness to risk herself to find clues to the incident. A still of Choi Hyun-hee (Kim Shin-rock) sitting in a wheelchair and assessing the situation reveals his strong composure in resolving the crisis. In the image of Han Kyu-seong (Go Soo) supporting a terrified student and looking around, his altruistic humanity is evident, while a strangely posed infected person is approaching them, keeping tension high.
Furthermore, stills of infected people smeared with blood, looking in the same direction and making the same gestures, instantly evoke the film's title, "Gunche," and create a chilling effect. On the rooftop of the Dunguri building, where darkness has fallen, a special forces unit armed and lined up entering the building shows at a glance the seriousness of the situation, and curiosity mounts about the fate of the survivors fighting inside.
