Park Cheol-hwan, the producer who directed "Heart Signal 5," shared his thoughts after the first broadcast.
On the afternoon of the 15th, Channel A "Heart Signal 5" producer Park Cheol-hwan told OSEN in a written interview about his reflections on the previous day's first broadcast and about the show's development going forward.
"Heart Signal" is a program that observes and analyzes the romantic lives of young men and women unfolding in the Signal House and guesses the final couple; it released season 1 in 2017 and has already been produced up to season 5.
In the first broadcast of "Heart Signal 5," six housemates who moved into the Signal House were revealed, and producer Park Cheol-hwan said about releasing a new season after three years, "It felt like a long time, and because this season is the most renewed, I was more nervous. I wanted to capture the charm and love of the new generation in a way true to Heart Signal."
When asked whether the expected reactions came after the first broadcast, producer Park Cheol-hwan mentioned viewer responses, saying, "There were reactions like 'the pacing became faster and more witty,' 'the cast members' characters came through well so immersion was quick,' and 'the female cast members were cheerful and honest, which was good.' There were also reactions that it felt unfamiliar in parts where the candid interviews were woven in."
Producer Park Cheol-hwan said, "It's true that we worried for two seasons wondering whether people would accept it as unfamiliar," and explained, "Because the new generation has its own language, I thought it would be better to deliver that feeling vividly as it is. Please look forward to moments when the cast members' sincere words and uncontrollable actions come together to convey vivid and deep emotions."
The most eye-catching thing in the season's first broadcast was the appearance of the "unanimous girl," who captured the hearts of all the men for the first time in eight years since "Heart Signal 2." Kang Yoo-kyung received three votes and became the unanimous girl.
What does producer Park see as Kang Yoo-kyung's charm? Park said, "Kang Yoo-kyung seems to have a charm different from previous unanimous guests. Of course, her pure and handsome appearance was an important point, but as Park Woo-yeol said in a one-on-one conversation, she is honest, easygoing and has an eccentric charm," adding, "That kind of surprising side of her personality might be the reason a unanimous result appeared after a long time."
Producer Park Cheol-hwan said, "All the female cast members have distinct charms and characters, so more varied love lines and stories unfold than ever. Please look forward to it," predicting the love line developments to come.
Another fun element of "Heart Signal" is the celebrity panel's guessing. This season the original panel Yoon Jongshin, Lee Sang-min and Kim Eana are joined by new members Roy Kim and Tsuki, showing intense immersion.
Even with the panel's intense immersion already bringing laughs, producer Park Cheol-hwan expressed gratitude, saying, "Tsuki is keener than expected, Roy Kim is funnier than expected and is deeply immersed. I'm grateful and amused that they're so into it that it's almost as if immersion is the reason for misses or hunches not working."
He added, "This time there are many moments when it's hard to predict the result even after hearing the true feelings. Emotions are that much more entangled and there are many variables. Even when the panel is wrong, they seem to enjoy the chaotic situation itself, and that in itself seems to be a fun point."
Finally, producer Park Cheol-hwan said about upcoming changes to the love lines in the Signal House, "On the first day, during one-on-one conversations, the cast members' emotional progress sped up, and with the new housemates joining quickly, the tumultuous house becomes intense sooner," adding, "When love begins, you encounter many different emotions. Watching cast members experience both thrilling and scary, painful moments, it would be nice for viewers to feel the dopamine of falling deeply in love together. Please look forward to it."
