Star writer Baek Mi-kyung captivated viewers with her outstanding beauty and wit.
'Strong Woman Do Bong‑soon', 'The Lady in Dignity', 'The Miracle We Met', 'Melt Me', 'Mine' and many other popular drama she wrote, Baek Mi-kyung visited actress Kang Ye-won's YouTube channel and unleashed her charms.
On the 12th writer Baek appeared in a video titled 'Baek Mi-kyung thoroughly grilled Kang Ye-won | fortune·love·brutal truths' and immediately drew attention with visuals worthy of a famous actress. Kang Ye-won complimented Baek's beautiful appearance, saying, "People often say, 'Aren't you my real sister?' when they see us together."
But Baek's real charm shone through her down-to-earth nature, sense of humor and crisp wit behind her looks. Baek answered Kang Ye-won's questions and spoke candidly about her experiences.
When asked how to become a writer, Baek said the main route is "starting as an assistant writer," adding, "It's a profession that needs the least education, looks and connections. I post a notice and hold interviews. I pick people who submit the scripts they wrote and who intend to stay for a long time. I choose carefully and they go through two months of internship." Baek herself became a writer by winning a contest. She surprised listeners by explaining, "I think there's no one who has won as many (contests) as I have. My fortune chart shows I'm independent. It's a fate to do things without help from around me." Baek also revealed she has been immersed in studying saju (Korean fortune-telling).
Baek said frankly, "Whatever the profession, reaching the top involves tremendous pain and endurance, but it's particularly severe for writers. If I could go back, I might not do it. It's the loneliest job. There's no one to take care of you or look after you."
She also expressed her convictions as a writer. She said, "If the genre is comedy, you can't always follow the script. the set is full of ad-libs," adding, "In cases like 'The Lady in Dignity' it went exactly according to the script without changing a single particle. To state my conviction, truly good actors follow the script. They have the ability to perform as the writer intended. That ability is about the actor, not the respect for the writer," which drew strong sympathy.
She singled out Park Bo Gum as an actor she watches closely, saying, "(When I actually met him) the feeling was good. He's so harmless and his vibe and feel are nice."
She showed deep affection for actors she worked with, and when Park Bo-young came up she said, "I always like Bo-young. I highly rate her attitude and spirit as an actor. She's so cool. I always want to work with her. The actors I worked with are very precious and meaningful connections."
About her longtime close friend Kang Ye-won she said, "I rate her highly as an actor. I think it's good when someone excels at a specialized genre they do well," and jokingly offered heartfelt advice: "I think you'd be great at playing a totally crazy, out-of-your-mind role like a mad X with a mania," which drew laughter.
Baek, who is preparing several upcoming works, was asked, "If the ratings came out at 0.5%, would you rewrite (the script)?" She replied, "If that's the case, I think it's right to write to meet customer needs," and joked earnestly, "A writer's conviction? Well..." which created a sea of laughter. She went on, "In the age of capitalism what can I say.. you fix it. You fix it by any means, even if it means reviving a dead character or taking desperate measures to escape the 0.5% abyss," showing responsibility as a writer while emphasizing communication with viewers. Kang Ye-won said, "I love that about you," agreeing with Baek's conviction.
On the question of "manuscript fees," she mentioned that top-tier writers receive hundreds of millions of won per episode. She added, "Being a writer is not actually a job that makes a lot of money. You don't produce work every year; you prepare and it takes a long time to be released, so when you think about that, the writer's fee isn't that large," which made listeners nod.
Finally, when Baek said she would listen to Kang Ye-won's concerns, Kang said, "My fortune chart includes marriage. But it's with a bad man," and Baek said she could turn that into 'work,' raising anticipation and curiosity about her next project.
