Coupang Play's new high-teen series "The Absolute Value of Romance" has been unveiled. A tumultuous school life unfolds as the audacious imagination of a high school girl who wrote BL novels starring handsome male teachers intersects with reality, coming to viewers.
With its unique premise and the actors' fantastic chemistry, "The Absolute Value of Romance," which raises expectations, will be released on Coupang Play at 8 p.m. on Apr. 17 (Fri), and the production presentation held on the 14th was styled with the concept of a public class at Murim High School, the setting of the work, creating a cheerful atmosphere. Director Lee Tae-gon and actors Kim Hyang-gi, Cha Hak-yeon, Kim Jae-hyun, Son Jung-hyuk and Kim Dong-gyu attended the event, delivering vivid behind-the-scenes stories and raising expectations.
"The Absolute Value of Romance" foregrounds a dual structure that moves between reality and imagination. Director Lee Tae-gon said, "Beyond simple fun, I wanted to convey the essential message of 'human growth' that advances by using school experiences as a stepping stone," noting a differentiation from the existing high-teen genre.
Kim Hyang-gi, who plays Yeojiu, a high school girl who writes BL novels starring teachers every night, added depth to the character by even suggesting her hairstyle. The lineup of the surrounding "teacher corps" is also dazzling. Cha Hak-yeon plays the cool math teacher Ga Usu, Kim Jae-hyun the bubbly No Da-ju, Son Jung-hyuk the solid physical education teacher Jeong Gi-jeon, and Kim Dong-gyu the approachable Korean language teacher Yun Dong-ju — a preview of four distinct charms.
The highlight of the work is the variations of the characters in the novel "We were friends" that Yeojiu writes in the drama. Episodes that unfold as real-life teachers are reborn in the novel into bold and comic relationships aim straight at viewers' dopamine. The actors will deliver near double-role performances switching between reality and novel characters, offering a fresh fun never seen before.
The on-site chemistry was also superb. Cha Hak-yeon said, "Thanks to the director's pleasant reactions, I was able to act with confidence," conveying the convivial atmosphere. Son Jung-hyuk added, "It's a work with the rambunctious charm of a school recess," and Kim Hyang-gi said, "Following the process of the characters growing together will bring another kind of fun," highlighting the work's depth. The first broadcast of "The Absolute Value of Romance," which will rewrite high-teen grammar, is eagerly anticipated.<
