Singer Nam Tae-hyun, who received a suspended sentence for drug use, appealed after being sentenced to one year in prison at first instance for causing a drunk driving accident during the suspension period.
According to legal sources, Nam Tae-hyun submitted an appeal to the Seoul Western District Court on the morning of the 14th.
Earlier, on the 9th, the Seoul Western District Court Criminal Division 11 alone sentenced Nam Tae-hyun, who was indicted for violating the Road Traffic Act (drunk driving and speeding), to one year in prison and a fine of 1 million won.
The court pointed to the sentencing reasons, saying, "The defendant has confessed and shown remorse, but after receiving a sentence of at least a fine for drunk driving, he drove under the influence again within 10 years. In addition, he was sentenced to a suspended prison term for violating the narcotics control law, and committing this offense during the suspension period makes the blameworthiness high."
It added, "Given the high blood alcohol concentration and the high risk under the Road Traffic Act, such as driving at 182 km/h and hitting a curb, it is necessary to impose stern punishment." However, the court decided there was no concern that Nam Tae-hyun would destroy evidence or flee and did not issue an arrest warrant.
Meanwhile, Nam Tae-hyun is accused of, on April 27 last year, striking the central divider while attempting to overtake the car ahead near Dongjak-daero toward Ilsan on Gangbyeonbuk-ro. There were no casualties, and at the time Nam Tae-hyun's blood alcohol concentration was reported to have been at or above the license revocation level of 0.08%.
Moreover, criticism continues because Nam Tae-hyun committed the offense while serving a suspended sentence for drug use, and it was his second drunk driving incident after being caught for drunk driving in 2023 and receiving a summary order fine of 6 million won.
