Director Lee Tae-gon mentioned the on-set atmosphere of "The Absolute Value of Romance."
On the morning of the 14th at The Saint Hotel in Sindorim, Seoul, a production press conference was held for the Coupang Play series "The Absolute Value of Romance." Actors Kim Hyang-gi, Cha Hak-yeon, Kim Jae-hyun, Son Jung-hyuk, Kim Dong-gyu, and director Lee Tae-gon attended the event and talked about various aspects of the work.
The Coupang Play series "The Absolute Value of Romance" centers on handsome male teachers and follows a high school girl who wrote BL novels encountering them in unexpected moments in real life, becoming the protagonist of a tumultuous school life. The high-teen series is set to premiere on the 17th.
That day, director Lee Tae-gon praised the actors about their synchronicity, saying, "Actually, when you read the script it feels vague. I wondered what reaction it would get when filmed and what it would feel like when BL scenes appear on screen. Our actors, as if they had been waiting, pulled it off well."
The director said, "A lot of ideas came up on set and content that wasn't in the script was added, and it reached a point where it felt almost like reality — the male actors seemed to brighten even more during BL scenes. Their immersion was so deep it could be mistaken for that tendency."
Cha Hak-yeon said about the on-set atmosphere, "It felt like going back to my school days. The director couldn't help but laugh too, so we laughed a lot together while acting."
Additionally, director Lee Tae-gon answered the question of how he tried to express the characteristics of BL works, saying, "To be honest, I didn't know such a genre existed before seeing this script." He said, "While preparing the work I watched several pieces and found them enjoyable. I realized there are people who like this, and I thought it could be seen as a subgenre if handled poorly. I didn't have that mindset, so I aimed to make it a genre in its own right — comic on the surface but allowing the characters' sincere and earnest feelings to come through."
Director Lee Tae-gon raised expectations, saying, "In the drama, Eui-ju is caught writing a BL novel by Woo-soo. When Woo-soo asks, 'Why BL?' there is an answer Eui-ju gives while crying. It helped in directing to understand that Yeui-ju or Lee Muk had these feelings."
Meanwhile, the Coupang Play series "The Absolute Value of Romance" will be released at 8 p.m. on the 17th.
