Lee Soon-sil and Shin Ki-ru of KBS2's Boss, Your Ears Are Donkey Ears displayed chemistry like twins.
The 352nd episode of KBS2 variety show Boss, Your Ears Are Donkey Ears (directed by Choi Seung-hee, hereafter "Boss Ears") aired on the 12th (Sun) recorded a peak rating of 5.3 percent, maintaining first place in its time slot for 201 consecutive weeks. (Nielsen Korea)
For the Hong Kong location shoot, Jung Ho-young, Jung Ji-seon and Yang Jun-hyeok visited "Mosoo Hong Kong" and sampled the restaurant's signature dishes such as white sesame tofu, fern shoot fried rice, boiled pork, and acorn noodle, discussing the harmony of ingredients and flavor. When Jung Ji-seon ate acorn noodles loaded with expensive truffle and asked how the truffle aroma was, Yang Jun-hyeok innocently asked, "Is that a mushroom? Is it that expensive?" which drew laughs. After finishing his food, Yang Jun-hyeok, seemingly still hungry, looked for the bell and asked, "Is there no refill here?" adding to the amusement.
Later, when they went out onto the street, fans who recognized Jung Ji-seon and Jung Ho-young began requesting photos, highlighting their popularity. Watching this, Yang Jun-hyeok said, "I'm also that popular when I go to Daegu," but expressed envy, saying, "I'll have to go out as the black-and-white chef holding a yellowtail."
The next day Jung Ho-young guided them to Lamma Island, the hometown of Chow Yun-fat, as a new location tour spot. As soon as Jung Ho-young and Jung Ji-seon stepped onto the island and found places selling various seafood and sauces, they pestered Yang Jun-hyeok to buy them as a memento of the island. The "super rich spender" Yang Jun-hyeok readily agreed but could not hide his astonished expression after paying about 100,000 won for anchovies, mala sauce and others.
At the seafood restaurant, Jung Ho-young and Jung Ji-seon's "buy it for us" requests continued. With Yang Jun-hyeok's big flex, Jung Ho-young and Jung Ji-seon ordered elephant clams, slipper lobster, lobster, scallops and more without end, and eventually Yang Jun-hyeok showed his down-to-earth charm by cautioning, "Have you been starving for days? I'll buy it, but don't waste any," while everyone praised the fresh seafood. Watching a rockfish dish, Yang Jun-hyeok recalled his past. He said, "I used to farm rockfish, abalone, red seabream and flatfish, but it all failed and I cried a lot," which tugged at viewers' hearts.
Meanwhile, Lee Soon-sil met comedienne Shin Ki-ru and showcased an unabashed "girl crush" charm that drew attention. Shin Ki-ru gifted a custom-made pink matching sweater for Lee Soon-sil, and they posed for photos together, forming the "Soon-ki-ru sisters" and providing laughs. Lee Soon-sil responded with a table of side dishes including braised pollock, mung bean pancakes and Pyongyang cold noodles.
Watching Shin Ki-ru enjoying her food, Lee Soon-sil said, "I once ate 40 water dumplings," and Shin Ki-ru replied, "I once ate 70 rolling dumplings like popcorn," as they boasted about each other's appetites.
Famous in the entertainment industry for being food-savvy, Shin Ki-ru and Lee Soon-sil visited successful establishments to learn the secrets of old restaurants' success. The first stop was a galbisal restaurant that started in 1996 in a 13-pyeong shop and now operates four branches in Gangnam with annual sales of 5.5 billion won. The 81-year-old owner advised Lee Soon-sil sincerely, "Don't change your menu with the seasons; if you chose naengmyeon, even if you fall, fall because of naengmyeon, and when you get up, get up for naengmyeon."
They then visited a chicken restaurant run by three generations for 50 years. The second-generation owner said, "My father never took a day off after opening the chicken restaurant, and during the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup there was a chicken craze and sales kept rising," adding, "The secret to 50 years of popularity is seasoning of memories. We sell chicken along with memories, so customers still visit." Those words resonated deeply with Lee Soon-sil.
Broadcast every Sunday at 4:40 p.m. on KBS 2TV.
