Singer Lee Hyori is in deep mourning after the death of her father, and anecdotes about her father are being reexamined.
Lee Hyori's father passed away. On the 12th, her agency Antenna told OSEN, "Lee Hyori's father passed away."
Currently Lee Hyori is listed as a mourner along with her husband Lee Sang Soon and her siblings, and is reportedly keeping watch over the mourning hall in sorrow.
Famous as the youngest daughter of a barber family, Lee Hyori has on numerous occasions expressed poignant feelings about her father on broadcasts.
She said that in her childhood the family's financial situation was not good, and the anecdote that when her parents first came up to Seoul they only had enough money to buy one pig is well known. She said that the pig ran out of the house and that to catch it they ran the distance of five or six subway stops to catch the pig. In particular, Lee Hyori said her father was strict and that when she did something wrong he made her eat gochujang instead of corporal punishment, which drew attention.
He was a strict father but also a warm one. She said that when she went home for holidays she wanted to rest as Lee Hyori the "top star," not as the "youngest daughter" Lee Hyori, but her parents had to do the autograph requests they had been asked for, so she could not rest fully. In this context Lee Hyori said she found a notebook in which her father had practiced her signature and said, "I regret not showing less displeasure when my father asked me to sign."
Even on the variety show with her mother, "Mom, do you want to travel just the two of us?," stories about her father were not left out. Lee Hyori said, "When my father, after finishing work, asked me to step on his back it was such a bother, but looking back now I wish I had stepped on it more," and "My father was so scary when I was young. He hit me a lot. In a fit of anger he came up with 500 won for four children (during the difficult life in Seoul). I understand that my father had a lot of built-up resentment because of the hard life, but rather than complaint there was a strong feeling of anger and hatred that was lodged in my chest," among other inner thoughts she shared.
Lee Hyori's mother said, "When you were accepted to university your father was so happy he carried you and ran a lap around the living room," and "When you were a baby, worried that I might be worn out from doing laundry, I used to carry you in a baby sling and walk a lap around the neighborhood," conveying that although strict, he had a warmer side than anyone.
With these mixed emotions over her father's passing, Lee Hyori is keeping watch over the mourning hall prepared in Room 1 of Chung-Ang University Hospital's funeral hall in Seoul. The funeral procession will be at 7 a.m. on the 14th.
