The perpetrator in the fatal assault case of the late director Kim Chang-min apologized to the bereaved family in an interview with YouTuber Karakula, but it has only drawn criticism as an insincere secondary victimization.
On the 9th, a video titled I am the murderer of director Kim Chang-min was posted on the YouTube channel "Karakula Detective Agency." The released video featured the perpetrator Mr. Lee, who assaulted director Kim Chang-min leading to his death, appearing and expressing an apology to the bereaved family.
In the video, the perpetrator Mr. Lee said, "As the perpetrator in the case of the late director Kim Chang-min, as a party to the incident, I want to say I am very sorry and offer my apologies to director Kim Chang-min, who passed away, and his surviving family members who were victims."
He apologized, saying, "First of all, I am very sorry to the late director Kim Chang-min. I am so sorry. I really have no thoughts other than the words I'm sorry, and I am truly sorry."
He continued, "I really know the sorrow of losing a son that the bereaved family feels, and I am sorry," and added, "I am so sorry that there is nothing I can say except 'I'm sorry.'"
However, the apology video lasted only about two minutes. The perpetrator even looked up at the camera and ended the brief, contentless apology quickly, saying, "That's it."
In response, the comments were flooded with rebukes of the perpetrator. Internet users expressed outrage at the insincere apology, saying, "It looks like mockery, not an apology," "An apology after killing someone?" and "Preparing for reduced sentencing in advance."
Criticism also poured in urging a sincere apology to the victim's family rather than YouTube, saying, "It's surprising that a murderer can appear on YouTube," "He didn't apologize to the bereaved family for six months since the incident. This is just yielding to public opinion," and "Stop doing this here and apologize to the victim's family. Stop the show."
Director Kim Chang-min was in October last year at a restaurant in Guri, Gyeonggi Province, dining with his developmentally disabled son when he was gang assaulted by Mr. Lee's group and fell into a brain-dead state. He ultimately never regained consciousness and passed away after donating organs, saving four lives, prompting widespread sorrow. <
