(Following interview ③) 2PM member and actor Hwang Chan-sung met viewers with Bloodhounds 2 and shared recent news ahead of the group's Tokyo Dome concert and member Ok Taecyeon's wedding.
Hwang Chan-sung recently met fans through the Netflix original series Bloodhounds 2, which was released to popular acclaim. Bloodhounds 2 is a drama that depicts Geon-woo (Woo Do Hwan) and WOOJIN (Lee Sang Yi), who beat up a brutal illegal loan shark gang, once again landing a satisfying straight hook against a global illegal boxing league ruled by money and violence.
Following season 1 of Bloodhounds, which was released in 2023, season 2 was released three years later, and Hwang Chan-sung gave a passionate performance in season 2 as Tae-geom, the right-hand man of villain Baek-jeong (Jung Jihoon). Recently, I met Hwang Chan-sung at an office in Yeouido, Seoul, to talk about the work and his recent activities.
Following the popular release of Bloodhounds 2, Hwang Chan-sung will meet fans at 2PM's 15th concert, The Return, at Tokyo Dome on May 9 and 10. The concert is only about a month away. Hwang Chan-sung said, I am roughly controlling my diet. When I meet people I eat regular meals, and otherwise I only eat tomato soup with chicken breast, cabbage salad, eggs, and almonds. Because I'm an idol preparing for a performance, I decided to slim down a bit on my own, he said calmly, explaining his preparations to meet fans on stage.
Before Tokyo Dome, the group's second married member will be born this month. It's Ok Taecyeon. How does it look to Hwang Chan-sung, who became 2PM's first married member and a father with his 2022 marriage and the birth of a daughter? He said, I tend not to think about how time passes, but when I heard news about Taecyeon hyung I thought, 'They've already been together that long.' Of course I congratulated him. I think the 2PM members will all gather at the wedding.
Otherwise, we are gathering to prepare for the concert. So did you also talk about Bloodhounds 2? Hwang Chan-sung said, Actually, we don't share acting concerns with each other. It's something each person worries about individually. Of course we monitor, and if something happens we check in to console or congratulate each other, but each person handles their acting concerns on their own.
As a 2PM member and actor who debuted in 2008 and has been running with the times since, Hwang Chan-sung said, When I debuted I was so busy I had several schedules a day and was out of my mind. Back then I was just busy getting through it. The volume itself was huge. I did my best on album quality, but I didn't have the capacity to think deeply about other schedules. Now I often think that I have to take care with each thing. In the past I was busy doing a large quantity, but now I want to do things one by one, not carelessly, and do them with quality, he explained the change.
He went on to explain the driving force behind running steadily for nearly 20 years: I gained a dream after I debuted. Before that I didn't really have a dream. Even when I wondered what I liked, there wasn't anything I particularly wanted to do. But after debuting, wanting to continue doing this work settled as my life dream. So rather than feeling worn out, the joy is greater and I like focusing. Of course continuing is hard, but it's still good, he said with a smile.
Hwang Chan-sung said, When I act I study a character, try acting, and acting is ultimately the work of finding the middle ground of whether this character and this line are lawful and appropriate in this situation, whether they fall within this boundary. Those things are very interesting. Seeing the results is also very enjoyable. These days after Bloodhounds 2 is released I look at the reactions and whether the response is negative or positive I enjoy that aspect a lot. When doing musical activities we also perform; what more is there to say. When 40,000 or 50,000 fans at a venue are only watching us it's the end of dopamine. Adrenaline surges. That's why I want to keep doing these things. There's no reason not to love this work, he added.
