Singer Han Seokyung updated on her current life with her mother, who has dementia.
On the 9th episode of MBN 'Exclusive World', youth star Han Seokyung, who was hugely popular in the 1990s for 'Nangnang 18', appeared.
Han Seokyung gained great popularity, winning the 1992 rookie award alongside Seo Taiji and i-dle, but she suffered hardships including the bankruptcy of a shaved-ice business and an APT. scam. Afterward, Han Seokyung, who was hit by the COVID-19 outbreak, also heard news of her father's death.
She mentioned her mother, who is currently battling dementia, saying, "My father got into a traffic accident while going out for a drink with my mother. He had just eaten with her and gone out. They said he passed away in less than 30 minutes. My mother suffered from depression for about a year, and it seems she has been letting things go one by one."
In later footage of their daily life, Han Seokyung and her child headed to a nursing hospital to see the mother. But the mother did not recognize her daughter, Han Seokyung.
Five years ago, after the father passed away, the mother began showing symptoms of dementia, and now even short conversations are difficult. Her appetite has recently noticeably decreased, and she could not eat the rice cake that Han Seokyung had brought herself.
With tears in her eyes, Han Seokyung recalled, "About a year after my father died, he would call and repeat the same stories over and over. At that time, her dementia was about grade 5. I thought, 'What will happen to my mother? Her symptoms are getting so much worse.'"
She continued, "My mother's condition kept worsening, so I asked my younger brother to take her in and care for her in the hospital. My mother has dementia and couldn't go outside. She would scream that she was being confined and look for me every minute. At the time, my son was preparing for high school entrance exams. I couldn't work because of my mother, and I was sick too. It was so hard. I thought then, 'If this is how it is, mother might as well pass away.' I feel like such a terrible daughter," she said, shedding tears and drawing sympathy.
However, she expressed affection for her son and resolved to live. Han Seokyung said, "Each day felt like being in a war. One day, I was washing dishes and crying so much. Then my son called 'Mom' from behind. I couldn't bring myself to turn around, but he quietly came and hugged me from behind. Just knowing there was someone who understood even a little of who I am, I could get through that day. The one who turned me back on when I was out of order seemed to be my son," she said, showing affection for her son.
