"Radio Star" Um Ki-joon shared an anecdote about regretting refusing villain roles.
On the 8th episode of MBC entertainment "Radio Star" (hereinafter "Ras"), in a "The King's Warden" special, actors Kim Sooro, Um Ki-joon, Park Gun-hyung and Kim Hyung-mook appeared.
That day You Se Yoon asked, "I heard Um Ki-joon, a master of villain roles, tried to reset his image but only reset his bank account balance?"
Um Ki-joon said, "I kept taking villain roles and wanted to stop, so I refused, but then a good role came in. It was a neighborhood civil servant role. I decided to do that project, but I was cut after a week. The casting was reversed. After that I thought I should just do whatever they give me and work hard," he confessed.
And he said the project he refused did very well. When asked the drama title, Um Ki-joon said, "It's hard to say," and added, "I tried to change that role myself for no reason and wondered whether I did something wrong, maybe I should have just gone with the flow," which drew laughter.
Also, it drew attention when it was reported that Um Ki-joon was scolded by "Baby Dinosaur Dooly" after the broadcast of "The Penthouse." He said, "It's the scene where they search for the hidden Yujin. The director told me to play 'hide and seek' but I did it too much and sang the Dooly song. But because Dooly is a cartoon for kids, there was a complaint that 'how could you destroy the innocence,'" he said.
Having many kissing scenes in "The Penthouse," Um Ki-joon reportedly kisses for a full 20 minutes in an SBS kiss compilation. When kissing scenes with three actresses in the drama — Kim So-ryeon, Lee Ji-ah and Yujin — were revealed, Kim Gu Ra said, "Not bad for a villain," which drew laughter.
Meanwhile, when asked whether he is a completely different entertainer before and after payment, Um Ki-joon said, "Is it that I memorize lines quickly?" and added, "When hyung did the play 'Siryun' last year, I was contacted for several roles. I was John Proctor and had the most lines. But I memorized the lines in four weeks," he revealed.
Kim Sooro said, "He really is an actor who memorizes lines quickly," and the MCs asked, "Have you always been good at memorizing?" To that Um Ki-joon replied, "If I had memorized well in school, I would have scored well in memorization subjects."
Responding to the comment that his memorization is limited to scripts, Kim Gu Ra asked, "Because you get paid?" and Um Ki-joon, displeased, said, "But that's more of a promise than money." As the MCs looked uneasy, Kim Gu Ra corrected himself to ease the mood, saying, "When we said before and after payment, we didn't mean that money was the purpose; if that expression bothered you, please understand."
