The perpetrator A, who assaulted the late director Kim Chang-min leading to his death, conveyed apologies to the deceased and the bereaved family through the media.
According to a Newsis report on the 8th, A publicly apologized the day before saying, "I know I have committed a sin worthy of death against Director Kim Chang-min and his bereaved family."
On that day A said the reason for expressing apologies through the media was, "I did not know the contact information of Director Kim's bereaved family, so I conveyed to the investigative agency on several occasions my intention to apologize and reach a settlement, but I did not receive a response."
He bowed his head, saying, "I wanted to continue to meet and apologize, but there was no way to find the contact information. I am sorry again that I had to apologize first through the media, and if given the opportunity I will visit and offer my apology."
A said, "No words of apology will comfort the bereaved family, but I know I have committed a sin worthy of death and I have no intention of evading responsibility for this matter," and added, "I only want to say that I had no intention of harming Director Kim and that I truly tried very hard to avoid causing a fight."
He declined to disclose specific circumstances, saying, "Many aspects have been reported incorrectly, but I empathize with the pain of the bereaved family who lost a father and a son, and my sense of guilt is so great that it seems inappropriate to discuss it now. The detailed facts of what happened that day will be confirmed during the prosecution's investigation and the trial process."
Meanwhile, the late director Kim Chang-min was assaulted at a restaurant in Guri, Gyeonggi, last October while dining with his son, who has an intellectual disability, fell into a brain-dead state, donated his organs to save four lives, and passed away.
The police applied for arrest warrants for the perpetrators, but the court dismissed them on the grounds that "their residence is fixed and there is no concern about evidence destruction." The case was then handed over to the prosecution without detention. The bereaved family expressed anxiety about the noncustodial investigation, and the prosecution formed a dedicated team to begin supplementary investigations.
